The Netherlands are one of many teams hoping to get their hands on the Euro 2024 title, with the Dutch kicking off their campaign this Sunday. The one-time champions face Poland in their opening fixture, locking horns at 9 a.m. ET at the Volksparkstadion in what should be an interesting matchup.
It has been 36 years since the Netherlands unforgettably won the European Champions, beating the Soviet Union 2-0 in the Euro 1988 final, with Marco van Baster scoring that iconic volley on this stage.
However, that remains the one and only silverware Oranje have won. Furthermore, the Dutch have made it to the semifinals of the European Championship on only two occasions since their 1988 success.
As a result, the goal for Ronald Koeman's side is to end this wait. Fortunately for the Netherlands, they should enter this competition with tremendous confidence despite being placed in a tough group.
Van Dijk and Co. have been grouped with France, the favorites to win Euro 2024, as well as Ralf Rangnick's tricky Austria. The Dutch made it to this tournament after finishing behind the French in the qualifiers, losing both home and away to Les Bleus.
However, Komen's men are still in sensational form, winning all but two of their last 10 matches leading up to Euro 2024. This is a tremendous turnaround following an abysmal start under the former Barcelona manager, losing all but one of his first four games in charge after succeeding Louis van Gaal following their 2022 FIFA World Cup exit.
While Oranje lost 2-1 to Germany earlier this year, another candidate for the Euro 2024 title, Van Dijk and Co. have bounced back, winning their last two matches by an aggregate score of 8-0. Those victories came against Canada and Iceland, with the aforementioned Liverpool defender scoring in both games. Can the Dutch pull off something similar on Sunday?
While the Netherlands secured automatic qualification after finishing second in Group B of the qualifying tournament, Poland had to take the longer route, dropping into the playoffs after finishing third behind Albania and the Czech Republic.
The Eagles even underwent an early managerial change during this qualifying campaign, sacking Fernando Santos, the man who led Portugal to the Euro 2016 titles, after only six games in charge.
Fortunately, the central European nation got its act together in time, winning both the semifinal and final in Path A to secure a fifth consecutive European Championship appearance. Estonia were their first victims, winning 5-1 before overcoming Wales in the final courtesy of a dramatic penalty shootout.
Michał Probierz's side have also picked up steam, winning their last five matches in a row in the build-up to this tournament. Additionally, the Polish are unbeaten in their last eight games across all competitions and will be hoping to make that nine on the trot when they face the Netherlands.
Unfortunately, question marks linger over the fitness of talisman striker Robert Lewandowski. Can Poland win their Euro 2024 opener in the Barcelona superstar's absence?

The Dutch have been rocked by a huge blow, with Frenkie de Jong pulling out of the squad after failing to recover from an ankle injury on time. The Barcelona talent thus joins Marten De Roon and Teun Koopmeiners on the sidelines. Ian Maatsen, who played an integral role in Dortmund's run to the UEFA Champions League final, replaced De Jong but is unlikely to start ahead of Dumfries, Ake, Van de Ven, or Frimpong in the backline. Memphis Depay should start in attack and will likely be joined by Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons.
