Preview

Friday will see Poland and Austria lock horns in a must-win match for both nations. This bottom-of-the-table showdown is scheduled for 12 p.m. this Friday at the Olympiastadion as both sides desperately look to save their Euro 2024 campaign.

Poland enter this game on the back of their gutting defeat to the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 opener, losing 2-1 to the Dutch after conceding a late goal from Wout Weghorst.

The Eagles, who were without talisman forward Robert Lewandowski, took an early lead against Ronald Koeman's side, with Adam Buksa breaking the deadlock after only 16 minutes. Unfortunately for the Polish, they could not hold onto this advantage.

Cody Gakpo drew the game level in the 29th minute before Weghorst landed the dagger in the 83rd minute, with the Burnley striker scoring the winner despite coming off the bench. This leaves Michał Probierz's side in desperate need of a win.

While the four best third-placed teams will progress to the knockout stage, suffering two defeats in their first two matches will leave Poland in tremendous danger of crashing out in the group stage. However, there were a lot of positives from their opening fixture.

The Eagles mustered a handful of shots on the Netherlands' goal despite being without both Robert Lewandowski, who was injured for the first game, and Arkadiusz Milik, who was not fit to even make the squad.

Additionally, while Sunday's defeat put an end to Poland's five-game winning streak, Lewandowski and Co. were unbeaten in eight straight games prior to the Netherlands clash. Can they turn things around on Friday?

While Poland suffered a gutting defeat against the Dutch, Austria came away from their opener against France feeling a positive result would have been possible had it not been for N'Golo Kante's Man of the Match performance.

Ralf Rangnick's men put in an admirable performance against arguably the favorites to win Euro 2024 but were ultimately undone by Maximilian Wöber's 38-minute own goal. Meanwhile, Das Team were thwarted in the attack by the aforementioned Kante, with the 33-year-old legend rolling back the clock and mopping everything.

Austria were on a seven-game unbeaten run before that defeat but came away with their heads held up high, with Kevin Danso impressing at center-back — his unfortunate collision with Mbappe that led to Kylian's nose break stole the attention from a brilliant display.

Nonetheless, Rangnick's side are bottom of the table with zero points and cannot afford another defeat if they aspire to reach the round of 16. Fortunately, their form makes for a favorable reading.

Sabitzer and Co. have scored two or more goals in seven of their last 10 matches across all competitions against the likes of Turkey, Serbia, Germany, Sweden, and Belgium. Das Team could emerge victorious should they repeat their opening-game performance. Only time will tell if this is possible.

Team news

Poland: Robert Lewandowski has recovered from his injury but it remains unclear whether he will start or come off the bench. Karol Swiderski, who entered the tournament with an issue of his own, was subbed on in the Netherlands game and should be ready for this tie. Elsewhere, Arsenal man Jakub Kiwior should start in defense while former Gunners keeper Wojciech Tomasz Szczęsny will retain his spot in between the sticks.

Austria: Marko Arnautovic will be hoping for a start after Austria failed to score past the French. Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer will be in the lineup while Kevin Danso is expected to start at the heart of Rangnick's defense.

Key stats

  • This will be only the second meeting between these two nations at a major tournament.

  • Their one and only encounter came at Euro 2008, with that match ending in a 1-1 draw.

  • Austria won three of their first five showdowns with Poland (L2).

  • However, the Eagles are unbeaten in their last five clashes with Rangnick's side, winning three and drawing twice.
