Preview: Turkey vs Portugal

Top spot in Group F is up for grabs as Turkey and Portugal lock horns on matchday two. Both teams come into this match having won their tournament openers, with Turkey battling from 1-0 down to beat debutants Georgia 3-1 while Portugal also had to come from behind to secure a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

The win for Turkey certainly will give the Crescent-Stars a huge injection of confidence. Coming into Euro 2024, they were on a rather dismal run of five winless matches across all competitions, but that funk has now ended following their win earlier this week. However, Portugal will naturally present a much sterner opponent than minnows Georgia. For starters, Turkey have never beaten Portugal in a Euro tournament, nor have they been able to score against their upcoming opponents.

Meanwhile, Portugal, who won the Euro back in 2016, had a fantastic qualifying campaign leading up to this tournament. Roberto Martinez's men were flawless during qualifiers, recording ten wins out of ten to top their group with ease and establishing themselves as potential contenders to win the title this summer. Yet, in their tournament opener, Portugal were dealt a huge shock as they fell a goal behind to the Czech Republic - which appeared to awaken them from their stupor.

It did not take long for Portugal to restore parity, and in a moment that surely will make his family proud, Francisco Conceicao came off the bench to score the game winner in extra time. His feat comes over two decades after his father, Sergio, netted a hat-trick against Germany at Euro 2000, and naturally, many Portuguese fans will hope that there will be more to come for the rising star.

The win also saw records set by both Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the latter hoping to achieve another huge record on Saturday if he can add to his already impressive goal tally. Should the multi-Ballon d'Or winner do so, he will become the oldest ever player to score at a European championship in what is his sixth appearance in this competition.
