Preview

Group A comes to a wrap this Sunday, with Germany facing Switzerland while Scotland lock horns with Hungry in simultaneous 3 p.m. ET (19:00 GMT) kick-offs.

Only one of these four teams have secured progression to the round of 16 and they are the hosts, with Julian Nagelsmann's side sitting top of the table with six points. Meanwhile, the Swiss have not qualified for the knockout stage yet but with four points to their name, Xhaka and Co. will likely seal their ticket irrespective of the Deutsche Bank Park result.

Jamal Musiala, Toni Kroos, and Ilkay Gundogan have stolen the show for the four-time FIFA World Cup winners, guiding them to a 5-1 win over Scotland in their opener and a 2-0 triumph over Hungary on Matchday 2.

Switzerland, on the other hand, were held to a 1-1 draw on Matchday 2 but kicked off their campaign with a much-needed 3-1 victory over Hungary. Nati will want to either win their group or finish in the top two, which they are yet to achieve.

Scotland and Hungary lock horns in the MHPArena and a lot more is at stake in this tie. The four best third-placed teams are also awarded a spot in the round of 16, and as a result, both nations are still in the running.

The Tartan Army watched helplessly as Steve Clarke's men were thrashed 5-1 by the hosts in the European Championship's heaviest opening-day defeat. Andy Robertson and Co. delivered an improved performance in their second game, drawing 1-1 with the Swiss, but their tournament remains on a knife's edge.

Magyarok, on the flip side, are on zero points after suffering back-to-back defeats in the competition. First came the 3-1 loss to the Swiss before being beaten 2-0 by the hosts. Despite this, Hungary's hopes of making the last 16 remain alive — though Marco Rossi's men will need a miracle on Group A's final day.

Permutations

Germany are already through to the last 16 and will finish in the top two. The hosts simply need to avoid defeat on Sunday to win the group.

Switzerland will win the group if they beat the Germans. Nati will finish in second with a draw or if Scotland fail to beat Hungary — at which point, the result in this game would not matter. If Xhaka and Co. lose and Scotland triumph, they will both finish with four points and will be split on overall goal difference, followed by overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, and finally European qualifiers rankings.

Scotland will get eliminated if they lose. A draw likely will not suffice as that will leave them with only two points — three points is the magic number for a third-placed team to progress. Steve Clarke's men are unlikely to leapfrog the Swiss into second place even if they win and their rivals lose because Scotland are six goals worse off in goal difference.

For Hungary, things are simple: they must beat Scotland in order to finish third. They have a -4 goal difference, which puts them at a tremendous disadvantage. This means a huge win might be necessary for Marco Rossi's men to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Round of 16 bracket: Who will face who in the knockout stage?

The winner of this group (only Germany or Switzerland can mathematically win this group) will face the runners-up in Group C. Denmark are currently second in Group C but England, Slovenia, and Serbia could all finish as runners-up.

The runners-up in this group will face the runners-up in Group B. This means Germany, Switzerland, or Scotland — all three can mathematically finish second — could face Italy, Albania, or Croatia.

If the third-placed team qualify for the round of 16, they will face Spain, Portugal, or the winner of Group E (Belgium, Romania, Ukraine, and Slovakia all head into the final Matchday with three points each).

Team news

Germany: Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Maximilian Mittelstadt, and Robert Andrich are all a booking away from suspension. Otherwise, the hosts have no concerns.

Switzerland: Question marks linger over the fitness of Denis Zakaria, Steven Zuber, and Dan Ndoye. Breel Embolo, on the other hand, could start after coming off the bench in the two previous fixtures.

Scotland: Ryan Porteous remains suspended following his opening-day red card while Kieran Tierney's tournament is over after being stretchered off the pitch against Switzerland with a hamstring injury.

Hungary: No major concerns

Key stats

  • Germany could become only the third host nation in European Championship history to win every group-stage match.

  • Switzerland are unbeaten in their last three encounters with Germany (W1, D2).

  • Germany and Switzerland have not met in a major tournament since the 1966 FIFA World Cup, with (West) Germany winning that encounter 5-0.

  • Hungary have not won any of their last eight European Championship matches (D4, L4).

  • Scotland have won two of their last three meetings with Sunday's opponent (L1).

  • The overall head-to-head record is tight but slightly favors Hungary, with Magyarok winning four of their nine previous encounters while the Scottish have triumphed on three occasions (D2).
