Euro 2024: Phil Foden's departure explained as Man City star leaves England camp for "pressing family matter"

The England national team dropped an unexpected statement in the wake of their disappointing goalless draw with Slovenia in their final Group C match in Euro 2024.

The FA revealed that Phil Foden, one of the nation's most talented attackers, left the camp and Germany altogether to return to the United Kingdom due to a "pressing family matter".

At first, no explanation further than this was issued, giving rise to concern about the Manchester City star's well-being. Additionally, while the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season is yet to light the tournament on fire, the 24-year-old has shown incremental improvement in his performances following his dreadful display in the win over Serbia.

Fortunately, an explanation was offered for Foden's abrupt departure, with BBC Sports editor Dan Roan revealing that Phil is simply flying home to be present for the birth of his third child.

Additionally, the Etihad Stadium sensation is expected back with the national team in time for Sunday's round of 16 fixture. While England's opponent is yet to be determined, the Three Lions will likely face the Netherlands in the knockout stage.

This is a huge boost. Firstly, on a human level, Foden has departed for a joyous reason. Additionally, Southgate can expect the player back in the right state of mind for the knockout stage.

However, the Euro 202o runners-up are yet to address their main issue and that is the balance — or lack thereof — in the team. Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer came off the bench in the frustrating goalless draw with Slovenia, injecting much-needed pace into the match and giving fans a glimmer of optimism. Only time will tell if this will carry on into the knockout stage.
