What are this week's must-watch games?

Switzerland vs. Italy kicks off the Euro 2024 round of 16 live this Saturday at 12 p.m. ET on FS1, Univisión, and TUDN USA

The round of 16 in Euro 2024 kicks off this Saturday with reigning champions Italy taking on Switzerland in the opening game of this stage. The Azzurri made it to the knockout round following a dramatic last-gasp draw with Croatia but were ultimately disappointing in the group stage and need improvement. The Swiss, on the flip side, impressed in Group A and came within inches of beating Germany to the top spot. Will Xhaka and Co. eliminate the four-time FIFA World Cup champions and make the quarterfinals? Don't miss this showdown.

Germany vs. Denmark live this Saturday at 3 p.m. ET on FOX Network, Vix, and fubotv

The hosts will be in action later that Saturday, with Germany taking on Denmark in the round of 16. Nagelsmann's side enter this round after winning Group A, having beaten Scotland and Hungary before rescuing a draw against Switzerland on Matchday 3. Denmark, on the flip side, did not win a single group-stage match, picking up three draws in a row. Despite this, De Rød-Hvide finished as runners-up behind England in Group C and will now face the daunting task of overcoming the continental giants.

Spain vs. Georgia live this Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on Fox Network, ViX, and fuboTV

Spain kick off their knockout stage campaign on Monday, with one of the favorites for the title locking horns with Georgia in what promises to be an interesting showdown. La Furia Roja are the only side with a perfect record, winning all three group-stage matches. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winners beat Croatia, Italy, and Albania. Kvaratskhelia and Co. shocking beat Portugal 2-0 on Matchday 3 to book their ticket to the last 16 but will face an even tougher battle this weekend.

France vs. Belgium live this Monday at 12 p.m. ET on FS1, ViX, and fubotv

All eyes will be on this clash as two continental giants battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinals. France find themselves in this predicament after shockingly missing out top spot in Group D, finishing as runners-up behind Austria thanks to a 1-1 draw with Poland on Matchday 3. Likewise, the Red Devils slipped up in their final group-stage fixture, drawing nil-nil with Ukraine to finish behind Romania in Group E. Neither side have been impressive this tournament but both teams are stacked with stars that should make this match-up exciting.

USA vs. Uruguay live this Monday at 9 p.m. ET on Univisión, TUDN USA, Fox Sports 1, and ViX

While there are many other thrilling Euro 2024 round of 16 matches taking place over the next seven days, the final game to make this list is the USMNT's highly-anticipated showdown with Uruguay in the 2024 Copa America. The Stars and Stripes suffered a frustrating 2-1 loss to Panama recently and while they remain second in Group C with three points, the hosts are in grave danger of crashing out in the group stage. Gregg Berhalter's side are not the favorites to win against La Celeste. If they lost against Uruguay and Panama triumph over Bolivia on the final day, the USMNT will suffer an embarrassing elimination on home soil. Don't miss this showdown.

This week in women's soccer, NWSL

This week in women's soccer will feature key NWSL games, plus reactions following Alex Morgan's surprise omission from the Olympic team.

Although pretty much the vast majority of European leagues are now on summer hiatus, there is still plenty happening in the world of women's soccer.

That includes ongoing matches in Scandinavia, as well as over in the NWSL.

Here's all you need to know ahead of another week of women's soccer.

NWSL

The 2024 NWSL title race continues to pick up pace with three teams all jostling to seize the top spot. Matchday 14 will get underway on Friday, June 28th with Kansas City Current vs. Houston Dash. The Current are back on top of the table but drew their last fixture, so it goes without saying that they will be aiming to pick up all three points on Friday to temporarily put themselves three points clear of Orlando Pride.

Meanwhile, the Pride will be in action on Sunday against Angel City. Given that they're playing 48 hours after Kansas City and 24 hours after third-placed Washington Spirit, who face North Carolina Courage on Saturday, the Pride will obviously want to at least match whatever results the other two teams gain from their respective fixtures.

Washington Spirit, for their part, are presently third in the table, but just one point behind Kansas City Current and Orlando Pride. Hence, any slip-ups from the aforementioned two teams could see the Spirit emerge as the new league leader after this round.

While much of the focus will be on Kansas City Current, Orlando Pride, and Washington Spirit, fans will also want to keep an eye on NJ/NY Gotham. They have found some form recently and will come into their Saturday match against Seattle Reign having won four on the bounce, which has helped them rapidly climb up the table into fourth spot. Given that the Reign have picked up just one point from their last five and have won just two matches so far this season, the Goths certainly will be fancying their chances at making it five wins in five matches and trying to close the gap on the top three teams in the table.

Damallsvenskan and Toppserien

In Scandinavia, the top leagues in women's soccer are all still in process, with ongoing title races in Sweden's Damallsvenskan and Norway's Toppserien.

Here's where you can catch key games in Sweden and Norway.

Top news in women's soccer

Emma Hayes makes bold decision and leaves Alex Morgan off Olympic roster

Former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes only just took over as manager of the USWNT, and the English tactician is already making some huge waves.

For starters, Hayes, who recently announced her squad ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games, has made a very bold decision to leave a key player off the list entirely.

That player is none other than veteran striker Alex Morgan, who has been a mainstay of the USWNT for nearly 15 years since making her debut back in 2010. The 34-year-old, who currently plays her club football for San Diego Wave, has scored 123 goals in over 200 appearances for the Stars and Stripes, and despite not having the best season so far at club level, many had nonetheless expected her to be one of the 18 players heading to Paris this summer.

However, for the first time since the 2008 version of the Games, Morgan will not be part of the USWNT. She has featured in three Olympic tournaments (2012, 2016, and 2020). Rather, Hayes has decided to focus on other options such as Portland Thorns striker Sophia Smith and Morgan's San Diego Wave Jaedyn Shaw, who at 19, is nearly half Morgan's age. Meanwhile, Hayes has not totally shunned more experienced players, with fellow veteran Crystal Dunn receiving a call-up. All in all, it will be very interesting how the USWNT fares this summer, with pressure on the Stars and Stripes especially high after their disappointing showing during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup last year.

San Diego Wave opt to sack manager Casey Stoney after turbulent start to the season

Morgan's club team, the San Diego Wave, have not been having the best time so far this season. Despite winning the 2023 NWSL Shield, the Wave, so far, are yet to reach the same heights they enjoyed a year ago. At the moment, they currently find themselves in ninth spot, with just four points earned out of a possible 15 from their last five fixtures.

As is often seen in football, managers are quick to be let go, creating what many call the "managerial merry-go-round" - so abrupt sackings is par for the course. Nonetheless, Casey Stoney's dismissal has generated plenty of buzz. The 42-year-old former midfielder was first hired by the Wave back in July 2021 and took charge of the team in 2022 during its inaugural season. Under her tenure, the Wave not only won the 2023 NWSL Shield but also clinched the NWSL Challenge Cup at the start of the current season.

Stoney was even reportedly considered as a potential replacement for Emma Hayes after the latter announced her departure from Chelsea earlier this year, as she had not only played for the Blues from 2007 to 2011 but also had briefly served as a player-manager in 2009.

Yet, with the Wave struggling for results lately - they have not won a match since May - it appears that winning two titles with the team was not enough to save Stoney's position. Next up for the Wave, who will be under the guidance of interim boss Paul Buckle, will be a Friday evening clash against the Chicago Red Stars.

MLS: TV Schedules and Live Streaming details - June 28-29, 2024

Club soccer does not stop for Major League Soccer fans, and this weekend promises to be quite entertaining for those who follow the games on TV, on their mobile devices, or for those who choose to do so live at the venues where the clashes will take place.

The top-tier category in the United States will have its kickoff on June 28, which may come as a surprise to most since the league has almost never seen the start of a matchday on that day. Leaving that curiosity behind, there will be thirteen fixtures to choose from during this Saturday, which could see some interesting changes at the top -and bottom- halves of each conference.

Here is all you need to know as a massive week of the 2024 Major League Soccer season gets underway.

Broadcast and live-streaming info for MLS in the USA and in select countries

For fans in the United States, all games can be streamed live via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, with English and Spanish commentary available on the platform.

MLS Season Pass on Apple TV also provides live-streaming of this week's games for fans based in multiple other countries, including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and more.

Top Major League Soccer games to watch this week

New England vs Columbus Crew: The defending champions have won all but one of their last five games, and to keep in contention for the top spot in the East, they cannot afford to drop points here. Nonetheless, the Revs get to this fixture with one of the hottest streaks in the league: four wins in a row and a big chance to reach the top ten. It will be an entertaining match to follow, especially if you consider that the Crew claimed a 2-1 win in their last trip to Gillette Stadium last season.

Nashville vs Inter Miami: The Herons get to this game with much to prove, even if they are still top of the Conference -and the league-. Martino's men seem to have been able to keep their good run without their biggest names, but facing Nashville will not be an easy test. Both teams get to this clash undefeated in their last three games (two wins and one draw for each), but if there is something that may give you a hint on how things could unfold is the recent record between them, where Miami comes out on top with five games without a loss and three wins in that process.

Fans who want to follow the games in English may do so on Peacock, with Carlos Yustis and Juan Arango providing live English commentary on the streaming platform and on SiriusXM NBC Sports Audio Channel 211.

In addition to the senior squad, fans will also be able to follow the women's category and the youth teams on the streaming platform. Other content related to the team, such as interviews or highlights, will be available on the team's special show, Futbol Estelar Chivas Extra.

Euro 2024: Saliba fires warning shot at Belgian center-back Wout Faes ahead of France vs. Belgium showdown

Les Bleus will face the Red Devils in the knockout stage after finishing as runners-up in Group D behind unexpected winners Austria. Meanwhile, the Red Devils finished second in Group E, meaning these two sides will battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Leicester center-back Faes, who started in all three group-stage matches for Belgium, stated that they are not afraid of the French following their goalless draw with Ukraine in their Group E finale.

However, this comment sparked a response from Saliba during an interview with RMC Sport. The Frenchman, who is yet to concede a goal in open play this tournament, fired back a warning shot at his Premier League counterpart, telling the Belgian international: "We will see on Monday". Read more…

Appearing at their first European Championship, Georgia had to record their first-ever victory at the tournament to reach the last 16 when they played Portugal in Gelsenkirchen.

De Bruyne stays tight-lipped on Belgium fan fury

Kevin De Bruyne refused to comment on the angry reaction of Belgium fans after Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Ukraine at Euro 2024, insisting that "we need them" ahead of a last-16 match with France.

Belgium missed the chance to finish top of Group E after having to settle for a point in Stuttgart, with De Bruyne seemingly instructing his team-mates not to head over to applaud the supporters after the game.

The Manchester City playmaker was making his way towards the Belgium fans behind the goal before appearing to change his mind as the whistling and booing intensified.

"Everything is possible": Denmark unawed by Euros hosts Germany in last-16

Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard backed his underdog side ahead of Saturday's last-16 meeting with Euro 2024 hosts Germany, saying "everything is possible".

Denmark drew 0-0 with Serbia in Munich on Tuesday but qualified second in the group after the parallel England-Slovenia Group C match finished with the same scoreline.

With Denmark and Slovenia equal on points along with goals scored and assisted -- and even disciplinary records -- the Danes progressed due to having a higher European qualification ranking.

As a result, Denmark -- who reached the semi-finals of the most recent Euros -- will face hosts Germany in Dortmund on Saturday. Read more...

Scaloni says Argentina showed self-belief in late win over Chile

World champions Argentina showed their steel and killer instinct as they beat Chile 1-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Lautaro Martinez's 88th-minute winner delighted the 82,000, overwhelmingly pro-Argentina crowd at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

It leaves Chile, Copa America winners in 2015 and 2016, needing to beat Canada on Saturday to have hope of staying in the tournament.

Argentina are chasing their third straight major title after their Copa win in 2021 and World Cup triumph the following year, and the confidence that comes with success was evident.

Despite valiant resistance from Chile, Lionel Scaloni's team never lost belief as they delivered another performance full of grit, allied with the flair and imagination that delights their fans. Read more…

Euro 2024: Phil Foden's departure explained as Man City star leaves England camp for "pressing family matter"

The England national team dropped an unexpected statement in the wake of their disappointing goalless draw with Slovenia in their final Group C match in Euro 2024.

The FA revealed that Phil Foden, one of the nation's most talented attackers, left the camp and Germany altogether to return to the United Kingdom due to a "pressing family matter".

At first, no explanation further than this was issued, giving rise to concern about the Manchester City star's well-being. Additionally, while the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season is yet to light the tournament on fire, the 24-year-old has shown incremental improvement in his performances following his dreadful display in the win over Serbia.

Fortunately, an explanation was offered for Foden's abrupt departure, with BBC Sports editor Dan Roan revealing that Phil is simply flying home to be present for the birth of his third child. Read more…

Euro 2024: The FA facing UEFA fine after England fans throw beer cups at Southgate following Slovenia draw

According to the Daily Mail, the FA will likely be slapped with a fine from UEFA due to the actions of certain England fans in the stadium for the Three Lions' drab nil-nil draw with Slovenia.

The Euro 2020 runners-up locked horns with Sesko and Co. in their final Group C match with their fans keen on seeing an improved performance from their national team. However, Southgate's men disappointed once more, drawing 0-0 to finish the group stage with five points.

While this was enough to see the continental giants win the group, finishing two points ahead of the Slovenians and runners-up Denmark, the fans were unhappy with this performance, with some displaying this dissatisfaction in an unsavory manner.

The manager went over to the supporters to applaud them and while the majority clapped back, there were some boos. Additionally, two beer cups were thrown at Southgate, which is set to trigger the previously mentioned fine. Read more…
