Preview

The round of 16 is fully underway in Euro 2024, with four matches having taken place already. However, the standout fixture of this round is finally here, with France locking horns with fellow continental heavyweights Belgium on Monday at the Düsseldorf Arena in a repeat of the 2018 FIFA World Cup semifinal.

France entered this competition as the favorites but unlike Spain and Germany, who will face off in the quarterfinals after beating Georgia and Denmark respectively in the round of 16, Les Bleus are yet to impress.

Didier Deschamps' men are yet to score from open play and despite picking up five points, the two-time FIFA World Cup winners surprisingly finished as runners-up in Group D behind unexpected winners Austria.

Interestingly, France began their Euro 2024 campaign against Austria, beating Ralf Rangnick's side 1-0. However, the decisive goal came courtesy of Maximilian Wöber's own goal. Kylian Mbappe also suffered a nose break in that game, which ruled him out for the goalless draw with the Netherlands on Matchday 2.

However, the Real Madrid superstar returned for the clash with Poland. Nonetheless, France struggled in attack once more, with Mbappe scoring through a penalty in a 1-1 draw — Austria beat the Netherlands 3-2 and pipped them to the top spot.

This means two things: not only will Mbappe and Co. face Belgium in the round of 16, but FIFA's second-ranked nation will likely face Portugal in the quarterfinals and one of Germany or Spain in the semis if they manage to get that far.

Despite all of this, France have not yet lost a competitive match since the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina. While there have been a few slip-ups here and there in friendlies, Deschamps has typically managed to get his team over the line when it matters most. Can he repeat this on Monday?

From one struggling underperforming giant to another, Belgium will hope to get revenge over France for that unforgettable 2018 FIFA World Cup semifinal encounter but the Red Devils have been plagued with issues of their own.

Domenico Tedesco's men suffered an unexpected defeat in their opening game, losing 1-0 against Slovakia in a game marred by a controversial VAR decision. Romelu Lukaku, who had squandered several goalscoring opportunities, was denied a late equalizer due to a perceived handball in the build-up, sparking frustration from fans.

Regardless, Belgium were left in shock but fortunately bounced back in their following game, beating Romania 2-0. However, De Bruyne and Co. played out a drab nil-nil draw with Ukraine on the final day to finish as runners-up in Group E behind Romania.

The Belgians should be fueled by revenge on Monday when they cross paths with France. These two sides locked horns in the 2018 FIFA World Cup semifinal, with Samuel Umtiti condemning Eden Hazard's side to a 1-0 loss. While Les Bleus went on to win the trophy in Moscow, beating Croatia in the final, Belgium settled for a bronze medal.

Two years later, the exact same thing occurred, this time in the 2021 UEFA Nations League final, with the Red Devils throwing a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to the French. Only time will tell if history will repeat itself.

Team news

France: Kylian Mbappe, who debuted his mask against Poland following his unfortunate nose break, should be fine to start. Antoine Griezmann, meanwhile, will likely return to the lineup after dropping out of the starting eleven in their Group D finale. Questions have been asked of Ousmane Dembele but it remains unknown whether he will be dropped. Elsewhere, Ibrahima Konate will be hoping for a start but is unlikely to displace fellow Premier League ace William Saliba.

Belgium: Dodi Lukebakio is back from suspension and will be hoping to displace Leandro Trossard from the lineup — though Yannick Carrasco is also an option. Axel Witsel and Thomas Meunier are injured while Wout Faes is a booking away from suspension, should Belgium's tournament continue. Lukaku, De Bruyne, Doku, and Tielemans are all expected to start.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals?

The winner of France vs. Belgium will face Portugal or Slovenia in the last eight.
