The incredible numbers behind Relebohile Mofokeng’s remarkable season so far

Mofokeng was a central figure yet again as he laid on a goal for Oswin Appollis and then scored a superb strike himself to reach double figures in the league this season.

It is remarkable to think that he did not have a goal or assist to his name midway through November and was in and out of the side.

His first goal contribution was a late assist for Yanele Mbuthuma in a 3-1 win at Lamontville Golden Arrows.

But since the turn of the year there has been no more prolific player in the South African league.

His first goal came in a 2-0 win at home to Magesi FC in late January, and he now has 10 in just 12 games since then. Add to that another five assists in that time and it is 15 goal contributions in his last 12 appearances in the league.

There is no one else who can come close to matching that form.

Overall, he has 17 goal contributions (10 goals, seven assists) in 18 league starts this season and 22 appearances overall.

He has not been as successful in other competitions, with a single assist in nine appearances, but those mostly all came before he hit his red-hot form in January.

It comes at the right time for Mofokeng as he pushes for a Bafana Bafana place at the 2026 World Cup, and he now looks certain to be in the squad, vying with Themba Zwane for a starting place in the ‘10’ role behind Lyle Foster.

In all, he has 29 goals and 30 assists in 120 appearances for Pirates since his debut in the 2022/23 season.
