Preview

Saturday delivered several exciting Premier League games but the attention quickly shifts to Sunday and one box-office showdown taking place at Old Trafford. That match is Manchester United vs Tottenham as Erik ten Hag's men aim to return to winning ways in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

It is only Matchday 6 in the Premier League but Erik ten Hag already finds himself under tremendous pressure at the club following another rough start to the 2024-25 season.

Manchester United enter the weekend sitting in 11th with only seven points from five matches, with the home side winning only two games so far. This includes their 1-0 victory over Fulham on the opening day and the 3-0 win over newly promoted Southampton earlier this month.

While Ten Hag's side recently thrashed Barnsley 7-0 in the FA Cup, the Red Devils have endured frustrating results over the past five weeks. They lost 2-1 at Brighton, were humiliated 3-0 at home to Liverpool, and drew 1-1 with Twente on Thursday.

That 1-1 draw came in their UEFA Europa League opener, with Christian Eriksen, who was at fault for Twente's goal, worryingly admitting that the opponents wanted it more.

As a result, Ten Hag's job security is already under scrutiny, with many wondering whether Ineos and Co. will sack the manager and appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy as his successor should his team's struggles continue.

Sunday's clash with Tottenham will put the 20-time English champions under test. The Red Devils slipped up when they faced Brighton and Tottenham. Ten Hag's men were unable to win against the North London side last season. Does a similar fate await Rashford and Co. this time?

Unlike Manchester United, Tottenham enjoyed their midweek UEFA Europa League opener, marching to a convincing 3-0 win over Qarabag. Brennan Johnson, Pape Matar Sarr, and Dominic Solanke all got on the scoresheet despite having a man sent off after only seven minutes.

This was Spurs third win on the trot following back-to-back defeats in the league earlier this month, with Postecoglou's side losing 2-1 to Newcastle before suffering a frustrating 1-0 North London Derby defeat to Arsenal in mid-September.

Nonetheless, Son and Co. are in 10th and are level on points with Manchester United with seven each. Despite this, the North London outfit should enter this fixture with confidence given how they performed last season against the Red Devils.

Spurs went unbeaten against Ten Hag's men in 2023-24, winning 2-0 when they met in the English capital early on in the season before drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford. It has been four years since Tottenham last won at the Theatre of Dreams and Sunday's fixture presents them with an opportunity to end this wait.

Team news

Manchester United: Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw are on the sidelines and will miss this tie. Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho could return to the lineup.

Tottenham: Son Heung-min picked up an injury scare during the UEFA Europa League win over Qarabag. While it is not thought to be serious, it remains unclear whether he will recover for this tie. Wilson Odobert and Richarlison are unavailable.
