Kaizer Chiefs can be title race spoilers as Sundowns, Pirates run-in revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns (56 points, +30 goal difference) and Orlando Pirates (54, +36) are locked in a two-horse race for the title, with each having seven games remaining.

Chiefs, Richards Bay and Stellenbosch FC must all play both title challengers in the remaining fixtures, with AmaKhosi potentially doing their bitter Soweto rivals Pirates a major favour if they can take points off Sundowns on May 6.

Polokwane City still have to play Sundowns home and away this season, starting next Wednesday and again on the final day of the campaign. Pirates beat them in both fixtures this season, but Sundowns have won only two of the previous four meetings with Rise and Shine (D1 L1), including a 1-0 defeat on their last visit to Limpopo.

Four of Sundowns’ remaining seven games are at home, where they have been virtually unbeatable over the past few years, with matches against Stellenbosch, Chiefs, Siwelele and Polokwane City.

They also go to the latter, Richards Bay and TS Galaxy, who have been a constant thorn in their side in recent times and knocked them out of the Nedbank Cup this season.

Pirates have only three home games remaining against AmaZulu, Chiefs (on April 26) and Durban City.

They go to Richards Bay, Stellenbosch, Magesi FC and Orbit College on the final day of the season.

Just when that final day of the campaign is may depend on whether Sundowns make the final of the CAF Champions League, as for now the dates clash.

It is currently set down for May 23, and the league must finish by May 24 for players to be released for the Bafana Bafana World Cup squad.

The Champions League final legs are scheduled for May 15 and May 24, but as the Betway Premiership rules state that the final two rounds must see all games played concurrently, the final games may be moved to midweek between these ties if Sundowns make it.

They play the first leg of their semi-final away at Tunisian side Esperance on Sunday.

Sundowns’ final seven fixtures: Polokwane City (away), Stellenbosch FC (home), Richards Bay (away), Kaizer Chiefs (home), Siwelele (home), TS Galaxy (away), Polokwane City (home)

Pirates’ final seven fixtures: Richards Bay (away), AmaZulu (home), Kaizer Chiefs (home), Stellenbosch FC (away), Magesi FC (away), Durban City (home), Orbit College (away)
