Nigerian teenager Chimezie Obi opens up on his Sevilla journey and Oscar Olomo's influence

From the quiet town of Akpo in Anambra State to the competitive environment of Sevilla International Academy in Spain, the teenager’s journey has been built on faith and relentless hard work.

Obi is steadily carving out his own path in Andalusia after arriving in 2024 for a trial that would eventually change his career. Since then, the 19-year-old has progressed to Sevilla C, taking important steps toward his dream.

But beyond the football, the teenager’s story is also one of adaptation, mentorship, and inspiration, with Nigeria international Akor Adams and coach Oscar Olomo playing key roles in his development.

"It has not been easy," Obi told Flashscore.com while reflecting on his move from Nigeria to Spain. "I came for a trial in 2024, and the club liked me.

"Then I had my first contract to start with the academy. I put in the work and moved to Sevilla C.

"It has not been easy, but with determination, dedication, and being close to God, I can achieve anything I want."

The transition from Nigerian football to the demands of European football has opened Obi’s eyes to a completely different side of the game.

Beyond the physical intensity, the young striker admits the tactical and communication aspects have been the biggest lessons since arriving in Spain.

"There is a big difference between Nigerian football and European football because here you have to learn more,” he explained.

"I have learnt things I never learnt while I was in Nigeria, especially the technical side of football and communication."

Language has also presented its own challenge. Obi still does not speak fluent Spanish, making communication during training difficult at times. Nonetheless, he is slowly adapting both on and off the pitch.

"I don’t speak Spanish, and the communication has not been easy because it is not all that the coach says I understand,” the youngster added.

"It’s a big lesson for me to learn how to speak the language so I can understand everything, but now I am getting it gradually. From a cultural perspective, I am a social guy, and I find it very easy to adapt easily anywhere I find myself.

"I make easily, and I try to emulate anything that I feel is right. The people I hang out with and stay with are good and are always willing to help, and they put me through in everything. I am getting it gradually, and I am enjoying every moment."

One man who has played a crucial role in Obi’s adaptation and development is academy coach Oscar Olomo. Despite the language barrier between them, the Nigerian credits the tactician for helping shape his understanding of the game and pushing him beyond his limits, while adding that their relationship goes beyond the beautiful game.

"Coach Oscar has played a big part in my journey because he has really helped me a lot," said Obi.

"He always tries to push me beyond my limits during training, and when I make mistakes, he is always there to correct me so fast that I can learn.

"He has been helping me tactically and also with the finishing aspect. I can never forget him because he also took me as his son. He would always tell me, 'Obi, if you want to be at the top, you have to work hard as a striker. You also have to play with the team. Think about the team, not about yourself,' I can never forget that."

While Olomo has become a mentor within Sevilla, another Akor Adams has inspired Obi from afar as the Super Eagles goal machine has become a source of encouragement for the youngster during chance meetings around the city.

"At the moment, I really look up to Akor Adams," Obi revealed. "I’ve met him several times, especially at the supermarket, and he always takes time to talk to me. That has really inspired me. "

For the youngster, wearing the Sevilla badge remains surreal, having admired players like Lucas Ocampos without ever imagining he would one day represent the same club.

"When I was in Nigeria, I followed Sevilla a lot. I liked Lucas Ocampos because he scored many goals. I never imagined I would someday play for this great club."

Now, his dream is clear: to continue developing as a player and work hard to earn an opportunity at the elite level.

For now, Obi’s story is only beginning, but with his determination and hard work, the Sevilla dream may soon become something far greater.
