Borchers' instant impact sees HJK earn point at KuPS after another for Ruoppi

KuPS 1-1 HJK

KuPS, champions in each of the last two seasons, came into this clash top of the table on goals scored, but have now moved a point clear of Inter Turku and remained unbeaten, despite playing a game more than most of the other sides in the division.

They got off to a great start with less than two minutes played - HJK goalkeeper Matej Markovic flapped at a cross from the right, allowing Jaime Moreno to head across goal for Otto Ruoppi to head in his third of the season.

The Helsinki side failed to generate a shot on goal in the first half, before head coach Joonas Rantanen threw on Mads Borchers at the break. That was made to look a stroke of genius from the HJK boss, as the Danish substitute grabbed the equaliser within two minutes of his introduction.

It was by no means a beautiful finish, as Toivo Mero played the ball low across the KuPS area, and Borchers was in the right place at the back post to bundle the ball over the line.

Inside the final 10 minutes, Borchers had a glorious chance to win it when he was played through on goal, and despite having all the time in the world, failed to place his shot past Johannes Kreidl, who made a superb save.

The draw means HJK's inconsistent start continues - they sit fifth on seven points, unable to build on a 3-0 derby win over Gnistan last time out.
