Hammarby secure statement win over champions Mjallby as Allsvenskan returns

Hammarby 3-0 Mjallby

Hammarby, runners-up in the previous two campaigns, came into this with something of a point to prove after finishing 13 points behind Mjallby, who smashed the points record to win their maiden major trophy last autumn.

Both sides began this season with new head coaches in the dugout - Karl Marius Aksum being promoted from assistant coach was meant to represent continuity at MAIF, while Bajen were forced to bring in Kalle Karlsson, after Kim Hellberg departed for Middlesbrough.

But it was Hammarby who looked every bit the title contenders again, while Mjallby were a shadow of themselves. That said, it took time for the differences to become apparent, as the deadlock wasn't broken until the 42nd minute.

Abraham got free of the defence to latch onto a long ball forward, and though his initial effort was saved, goalkeeper Robin Wallinder failed to get the ball safe, allowing the forward to tuck home the rebound following a fortunate ricochet which appeared to come off Abraham's hand.

Two minutes later, Hammarby carved open a Mjallby defence which was so solid last season, as Abraham played a neat one-two with Nahir Besara and coolly tucked the ball past the goalkeeper.

The same duo combined three minutes after half-time, as Besara fed Abraham with a simple through ball from the edge of the box, and the left-sided man completed his hat-trick with another straightforward finish.

The result did not tell the full story, as Mjallby had more shots on goal across the 90 minutes, but didn't create a gilt-edged chance to trouble Warner Hahn in the home team's goal.

It's a first competitive defeat for MAIF since a 2-1 loss to AIK on 11th May 2025, which includes their run to the Svenska Cupen final before the international break, where they set up a showdown against none other than Hammarby.

Degerfors 0-3 Sirius

The other match on the opening day saw Sirius earn an impressive win of their own on the road at Degerfors, with all three strikes coming in the second half.

In fact, the second period was only seconds old when the visitors put together an intricate move on the left wing, before Isak Bjerkebo drew the goalkeeper and provided Neo Ozzy Jonsson with a simple finish.

The match still hung in the balance until 12 minutes from time, when a forceful challenge by Samba Diatara on Victor Svensson saw the visitors awarded a penalty. Bjerkebo did the honours and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the Uppsala side two up.

Robbie Ure hit double figures in Allsvenskan last season, and started 2026 as he means to go on, wrapping up the victory in the last 10 minutes by tapping home an unmissable chance after a precise ball across from Svensson.
