Belgium kick off their Euro 2024 campaign on Monday, with the tournament's dark horses facing Slovakia in their opener. This Deutsche Bank Park showdown commences at 12 p.m. ET (16:00 GMT) as the Red Devils look to start things off with a bang.
Belgium enter this tournament with the hope of ending their painful wait for silverware, with their gold medal at the 1920 Olympics being the nation's only success. If that was not enough, the Red Devils' golden generation is all but gone, with Euro 2024 likely to be the last European Championship for the remaining stars.
Eden Hazard, Toby Alderweireld, and Dries Merten are all gone while Romelu Lukaku, the youngest lasting member of that golden generation, is already 31. Can current manager Domenico Tedesco accomplish what his predecessor Roberto Martinez failed to achieve and guide the team to a major trophy?
The Italian-German tactician replaced Martinez after the Spaniard oversaw Belgium's 2022 FIFA World Cup group-stage exit, losing 2-0 to Morocco while drawing nil-nil with Croatia. Since his appointment, the European outfit have gone 14 games unbeaten.
This run includes their imperious Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, with Belgium going unbeaten across their eight matches, winning six and drawing twice. The Red Devils drew at home to Austria and Sweden, their two closest opponents in their group, but showed enough quality to earn them the title of Euro 2024's dark horses.
However, since completing the qualifiers, Belgium have played four friendly matches and have only won twice, suffering slip-ups against England and the Republic of Ireland. The Group E favorites bounced back with back-to-back victories over Montenegro and Luxembourg, scoring five goals across both matches, and will be aiming to replicate that on Monday.
Slovakia, meanwhile, will be focused on achieving something they have pulled off only once before in this tournament and that is progressing past the group stage.
That sole knockout stage appearance came in 2016, with the Falcons qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing behind Wales and England in their group. However, Francesco Calzona's side failed to repeat this in Euro 2020.
The Slovaks were phenomenal in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, however, picking up 22 points out of a possible 30. Lukáš Haraslín and Co. missed out on the top spot in their group, but it took a Portugal side with a perfect record to deny them that achievement.
Additionally, while the Falcons have slipped up in two of their last five fixtures, form is still on their side, winning four of their last seven matches. Only time will tell if the Belgians will end that positive run.
