Preview: Italy vs Albania

Although Italy come into this competition as the reigning title holders, there are still major doubts about the Azzurri and as to how far they can get in this summer's tournament. Currently led by Luciano Spalletti, who masterminded Napoli's successful Scudetto-winning campaign back in in 2023, Italy will be determined to prove doubters wrong as to their ability to compete on the big stage after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

To date, Spain are the only team to have won back to back European Championships, with La Roja achieving this feat in 2008 and 2012. Italy, naturally will be hoping to do likewise, and a win in this summer's tournament would help the Azzurri pull level with both Spain and Germany for the most titles won (three). Italy do come into this competition in solid form, and are unbeaten in their last six games. Notably, they have shown some signs of the same kind of defensive formidability that they have been well-known for over the years and have not conceded a goal in over 300 minutes of playing time - albeit over half of those minutes were during two friendly ties against Bosnia and Turkey, during which Italy scored just one goal.

Fortunately for Italy, perhaps, they will be facing an opponent who has not historically troubled them much in the past. Albania, who are only featuring at their second ever Euro competition, have never beaten Italy, with losses in every single one of their last four meetings. Despite a solid qualifying campaign that saw them top their group, Albania, who are currently being led by Brazilian boss Sylvinho, will certainly face a tall task ahead to get out of a quartet that also includes Spain and Croatia for company.
