Preview

The first Manchester Derby of the season is here, with Ruben Amorim preparing for his debut in this heated rivalry. The Portuguese tactician will lead Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium with the hope of triumphing while the hosts aim to turn their terrible form around.

The Cityzens boast the home advantage but while they sit eight spots above Manchester United in the table, Guardiola's side are the team in crisis.

Manchester City have been the envy of the world over the past decade but have failed to win all but one of their last 10 games across all competitions. This includes a run of one win in five in the English top flight, with the reigning champions falling nine points behind current leaders Liverpool as a result.

The Abu Dhabi-owned club lost 2-0 to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League in their most recent game and were held to a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace in their last Premier League outing.

Thus, the focus has shifted to Pep Guardiola, who has all but blamed his team's injury crisis for their current woes.

Regardless, the reigning champions must steady the ship as soon as possible. Last season, Manchester City beat their neighbors both home and away but their last battle came in the FA Cup final, which the Cityzens lost 2-1.

This means a return to form and revenge will be on the menu for the home side. Defeat, however, could see Haaland and Co. drop out of the top five for the time being.

Meanwhile, Manchester United also enter this derby on the back of turbulence, with newly-appointed head coach Ruben Amorim desperately trying to stabilize the ship.

Unlike City, the Red Devils won their most recent outing, beating FC Viktoria Plzeň 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday. However, the visitors are on a two-game losing streak in the league and cannot afford another slip-up.

Amorim's first Premier League defeat came at Arsenal, losing 2-0 in what was a mostly decent performance at the Emirates Stadium. However, they followed that up with a 3-2 loss at home to Nottingham Forest, with Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana committing costly errors.

And with that, the 20-time English champions sit 13th in the table and are at risk of being leapfrogged by 14th-placed West Ham. If that was not enough, Amorim's side boast only one win away from home in the league all season and will visit a club that has lost only once at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League since December 2022.

Team news

Manchester City: Rico Lewis misses this game through suspension after receiving a controversial red card at Palace. Rodri, Nathan Ake, and Oscar Bobb will not play again this year and will thus miss this tie. Meanwhile, doubts linger over the fitness of Manuel Akanji, Mateo Kovacic, and last season's Premier League Player of the Season Phil Foden, who has failed to hit the ground running this term.

Manchester United: Jonny Evans is back in training and potentially available for this match. Luke Shaw, however, remains unavailable after suffering a relapse in his recovery. Additionally, Amorim could make changes to his lineup, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee yet to impress under the Portuguese tactician.

Key stats

  • Manchester United have lost five of their last six Manchester Derbies in the Premier League.

  • Additionally, the Red Devils have lost 20 Premier League games against their neighbors, making them their second-worst opponent behind only Arsenal (21 defeats).

  • Manchester City are on a three-game winning streak at home to Manchester United in the league, scoring a whopping 13 goals during this run.

  • A win on Sunday would see the Cityzens win four consecutive home clashes against the Red Devils in the league for the first time since 1952-1955.
