Monterrey vs América - Preview and Team news

The time has come for Liga MX to crown another champion, and this time we could witness history in the making when Monterrey and América wrap up the action in the Apertura 2024 tournament. The first leg ended 2-1 for América, and even if they claimed the win, fans and experts believe they played to get a more comfortable lead prior to this clash.

Rayados' strength during the playoffs has come when playing at home. The team coached by former River Plate ace Martin Demichelis has won both of their games at home during the Liguilla, but those wins came against teams such as Pumas (1-0) and San Luis (5-1). Monterrey are unbeaten at home with Demichelis at the helm, but it will be a whole different ball game when they take on América with the title at stake.

Meanwhile, América face the wonderful chance to make history with a third consecutive title. Las Águilas endured a rough season marked by injuries to most of their players, which caused coach André Jardiné to experiment throughout the regular season. This fact gives an edge for the defending champions, as the Brazilian coach has many options to field a competitive team in search for the three-peat.

Speaking of the game, the title will be decided with the aggregate score, as the previous advantage given to the home team is now without effect. Monterrey need to win by two goals to claim the title, while a draw or any win will give América their third crown. If Monterrey win the game by one goal, there will be extra time and maybe penalties to determine the winner.

Unfortunately, the game will be played without some notable players from both sides. Monterrey have confirmed goalie Esteban Andrada and Lucas Ocampos as absences, but Sergio Canales, Héctor Moreno, and Victor Guzmán are serious doubts after the first leg. On the other hand, América's only absence for this game is Igor Lichnovsky, who has spent the entire tournament out due to a knee injury.
