Netherlands to face Uzbekistan in final World Cup warm-up game

The Netherlands were yet to announce the opponent of their last warm-up match in June, with a friendly against Algeria planned for June 3rd as the farewell game.

The KNVB announced on Thursday that World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, led by Fabio Cannavaro, will be the last opponent prior to this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands and Uzbekistan, who were drawn into Group K with Portugal, Colombia, and D.R. Congo, will face off at Icahn Stadium in New York City on Monday, June 8th.

The game will be played behind closed doors due to the limited capacity at Icahn Stadium, a 5,000-seater athletics stadium in Manhattan.

The Netherlands already played friendly games against Norway (2-1 win) and Ecuador (1-1 draw) in March and will have played teams from Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia before the FIFA World Cup. Manager Ronald Koeman had expressed his interest in playing teams from around the globe.

From New York to Kansas City

The Netherlands will travel to the United States on June 4th, one day after the friendly against Algeria, and will stay in New York City from June 5-8 for a pre-camp. Oranje will then move on to Kansas City, Missouri, where they’ll move into the Team Base Camp at the KC Current Training Facility.

Oranje will face Japan in their first FIFA World Cup game on Sunday, June 14th.

The game between the Netherlands and Uzbekistan will kick off at 14.45 local time (20.45 CET).
