Kaizer Chiefs aim for best run in seven years but desperate Magesi FC stand in their way

But there have been signs of life at Magesi in the last few outings and their coach Allan Freese is a wily campaigner. Chiefs will expect to win, but this will be no easy encounter.

Here are the talking points ahead of the only midweek league clash.

Five in a row?

Chiefs can claim a fifth successive league victory for the first time since they won eight in a row in the 2019/20 season under Ernst Middendorp.

It has been quite the turnaround in form for the side when you consider they had lost three games in a row before this current sequence of success.

They have in fact not drawn any of their last nine games (W6 L3) since a 0-0 stalemate against TS Galaxy in early December. If you extend that to all competitions it is 14 games (W9 D5).

Their current run has been built on a tight defence, conceding only once in the four games, and scoring eight times.

Those goals they have netted constitute a third of their entire season total in the league, having managed only 16 goals in their other 18 fixtures.

Magesi’s big chance

The focus will be on Chiefs, but Magesi have a huge carrot being dangled in front of them.

Once cast adrift at the bottom of the table, they will move out of the bottom two with a victory and into the safety of 14th.

It now looks like Magesi (23 games, 17 points, -15 goal difference), Orbit College (24 games, 19 points, -22 goal difference) and Marumo Gallants (24 games, 19 points, -17 goal difference) are the three in the mix for the automatic relegation spot and the play-offs.

Despite being bottom with only three wins in 23 games, Magesi have a better goal difference than the other two. In fact, they have conceded fewer goals (31) than any side in the bottom five.

Their three wins this season have all come at home – against Siwelele (2-0), TS Galaxy (2-1) and Marumo Gallants (3-0) last week.

Away run

The strange way the fixtures have panned out this season means this is the start of seven away games in a row for Chiefs. They do not play at home again until their final match of the campaign on May 23. Really quite bizarre.

Chiefs have done well on the road, though, winning five of their eight fixtures to date (D2 L1), and conceding only two goals in that time. The single defeat came at Richards Bay in early March.

Only Orlando Pirates (2.25 points) are averaging more points on the road this season than Chiefs (2.13).

Magesi chase history

It is a small sample size, but Magesi will be chasing a first-ever win against Chiefs on Wednesday.

They have met on three occasions, with Chiefs winning twice and one game ending in a draw. AmaKhosi have claimed victory in the last two meetings, including the reverse fixture this season that was played in Durban.

Chiefs’ goals have come mostly from their young guns. Mdu Shabalala (22) scored twice in a 2-2 draw last season, while Wandile Duba (21) and Mfundo Vilakazi (20) netted in that 2-0 win in Durban. Ashley du Preez (28) is their other goalscorer in a 1-0 win.

Magesi were leading that 2-2 draw by two goals until the 77th minute, when two goals in a minute from Shabalala earned Chiefs a point.

Silva lining

Flavio Silva ended a run of five games without a goal when he netted against TS Galaxy on Sunday.

He now has six in the Betway Premiership, the most by a Chiefs player, and would no doubt love to get to double figures by the end of the season, with some scrutiny over his position.

He has eight goals in 24 appearances in all competitions, a goal every 154 minutes, which is OK, but not enough for a lead striker at a club like Chiefs.

Silva has another year on his contract after this campaign, with the club having the option to extend for a further season, but his weight of goals will decide whether they do that.
