Preview: Hungary vs Switzerland

It may surprise many observers, but Hungary and Switzerland are not exactly familiar opponents in major international competitions. Indeed, Saturday's match between these two sides will be the first clash in an actual competition in nearly nine decades, with the last meeting taking place at the 1938 World Cup during which Hungary won 2-0. Since then, the two sides have faced off in various qualifying ties and other friendlies, and it's been Switzerland who have enjoyed the better record with six wins from their last nine ties.

However, Hungary's form leading up to EURO 2024 has definitely garnered quite a bit of attention. Currently under the guidance of Italian tactician Marco Rossi and spearheaded by Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai, Hungary come into this competition having lost just one of their last 14 matches across all competitions. In addition, they were unbeaten during qualifiers for this competition for the first time in national history, with five wins and three draws ensuring that they finished top of their group.

With Germany expected to top Group A, Hungary will naturally know that they will need to get their campaign off on strong footing as every point will be absolutely vital in order to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

Of course, Hungary's upcoming opponents, Switzerland, will obviously have the same goal. La Nati have some quality players in their ranks, with veterans like Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka no strangers to representing their country on the biggest stage. However, Switzerland's form has been shaky over the past year or so. They surprisingly finished second in their group behind Romania during qualification for EURO 2024, despite facing the likes of Israel, Andorra, Belarus, and Kosovo, and won just four of their ten games during that process.

While they have seemingly improved their fortunes and come into this competition on a four match unbeaten run, it is safe to say that current coach Murat Yakin will be feeling the pressure to ensure his side avoids what would be a rather embarrassing early exit at this summer's competition.

Team news: Hungary vs Switzerland

Hungary: Star man Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to be fit for this match despite leaving the pitch early during his team's recent win over Israel in a friendly.

Switzerland: Both Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria have recovered from injury issues to return to team training so could be in contention to be involved in Saturday's tie against Hungary. However, Steven Zuber is a doubt for this upcoming game due to a calf issue.
