Preview

Liverpool take to the pitch this Sunday in the Premier League with the aim of bouncing back from what has been a rough couple of weeks. Unfortunately, the Merseyside giants will be in for another tricky test, this time visiting Fulham for what promises to be an exciting 10:30 a.m. showdown at Craven Cottage.

The Reds enter this game on the back of another disappointing result, having faced Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday. The Merseyside giants traveled to Stadio di Bergamo for the 2nd leg and while they ended up winning 1-0, Klopp's men ultimately lost on aggregate and ended up crashing out of the tournament.

Liverpool suffered an unexpected thrashing in the first leg at Anfield, losing 3-0 thanks to a brace from former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca and Mario Pašalić. As a result, the 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture was not enough to overturn that huge deficit.

However, while ultimately meaningless, that scoreline brought an end to Liverpool's winless. While Salah and Co. triumphed over Brighton and Sheffield United in back-to-back games following their FA Cup quarterfinal defeat against Manchester United, Klopp's men failed to win three matches in a row this month.

First came the 2-2 draw away to Manchester United in the Premier League, a result which saw the club lose their grip on the top spot. The Merseyside giants were then thrashed by Atalanta before suffering a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, with Klopp's attacker squandering several opportunities to lose further ground in the title race.

Liverpool are now two points behind Manchester City, who are the favorites to win the league, while they trail current leaders Arsenal by three — the Gunners have already played this weekend, beating Wolves 2-0 on Saturday.

As a result, the visitors must win at Craven Cottage this Sunday to move a point ahead of Guardiola's men, albeit only temporarily. Will Liverpool beat Fulham for a third time this season?

The home side welcome Liverpool to their famous ground on the back of a much-needed win in the league. Marco Silva's men overcame David Moyes' West Ham in their most recent fixture, beating the London side 2-0 last weekend.

Andreas Perreira scored both goals on either side of half-time to end the club's three-game winless streak. The Cottagers had lost back-to-back fixtures prior to that, falling victim to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Regardless, Rodrigo Muniz and Co. have mathematically secured another season in the English top flight, though relegation was never really on the horizon, with the London side hitting the 42-point mark. The 12th-placed side are only two points adrift of the top 10 and would love to achieve that before the campaign ends.

Victory over Liverpool would go a long way in achieving that but that is easier said than done. Fulham have faced the Reds three times already and while all three fixtures were tight, Silva's men suffered defeats in all but one of those matches.

The first was the dramatic last-minute defeat at Anfield in the Premier League, with Fulham losing 4-3. These two teams then met in the Carabao Cup semifinals, with the Cottagers again losing by a one-goal margin (2-1) in the first leg. Muniz and Co. held the Merseyside giants to a 1-1 draw in the reverse tie and while a similar result would be impressive, expect the home side to go all out for the three points.

Team news

Fulham: The hosts are the only team in the league to boast a fully-fit squad, meaning Marco Silva has little to no concerns heading into this tie. Nonetheless, Silva is likely to name an identical lineup to the one that beat West Ham, meaning Muniz, Pereira, Iwobi, and Willian leading the attack.

Liverpool: Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip remain sidelined by the visitors' injury crisis has improved drastically. Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alisson are all back but Conor Bradley is still recovering from an ankle issue. Mohamed Salah, who was subbed off in the Atalanta game, should start but it remains uncertain whether he will be partnered with Jota, Diaz, Nunez, or Gakpo.

Key stats

  • This will be the 34th Premier League encounter between these two clubs.

  • Liverpool unsurprisingly dominate the head-to-head record, winning 20 of those encounters while losing only seven (D6).

  • Fulham are winless in their last six home encounters with the Reds.

  • However, the Cottagers have not failed to score against Liverpool at Craven Cottage since April 2009.
