Veikkausliiga leaders Inter Turku win derby but KuPS and Oulu keeping tabs

Inter Turku 2-1 TPS

The first top-flight Turku derby since 2020 went the way of Inter Turku, as they got the better of TPS for their fourth win in a row, consigning the designated visitors to back-to-back defeats following their unbeaten start.

FC Inter had already posed a threat before they took the lead with exactly 15 minutes played - TPS goalkeeper Elmo Henriksson got a hand to Alie Conteh's header after a teasing Clinton Jephta cross, but he was unable to prevent the forward's fourth goal of the campaign.

But the second 15 minutes belonged to TPS, who also had chances before they drew level in stunning style in the 29th minute. Elmer Vauhkonen played the ball back to Lasse Ikonen, who unleashed a rocket from nearly 30 yards out that flew into the top corner.

Again, the momentum swung following a goal, and the home side capitalised with four minutes left in the half, Henriksson came for but didn't gather Loic Essomba's cross, allowing Jasse Tuominen the simplest of headers.

A combination of desperate defending, poor finishing and near misses in the second half meant TPS failed to find a second equaliser, as Inter held on for a narrow win, which would have been by a bigger margin had Henriksson not atoned for his error with smart stops.

Inter Turku move onto 23 points from their 10 matches so far, while TPS have slipped to sixth, but they have accrued 12 points from two fewer games.

KuPS 2-1 Lahti

Inter's lead failed to grow as there were also three goals exclusively in the first half in the match in Kuopio, where KuPS also had the lion's share. They had to come from behind, as Otso Koskinen gave Lahti a first-minute lead before an Otto Ruoppi penalty and one from Brahima Magassa turned the game around. KuPS stay second after successive victories, but it's no wins in four now for Lahti.

SJK 0-1 AC Oulu

There was just one goal in Seinajoki, but it was enough for AC Oulu to take the points and stay hot on KuPS' heels and with a game in hand. Julius Korkko beat the offside trap to score it 10 minutes before half-time for a third win in four for the visitors, while SJK remain 11th with one win all season.

Jaro 3-0 Mariehamn

A meeting of the two winless teams was won comprehensively by Jaro, who climb two places to 10th and see Mariehamn take their place at the foot of the table. Ville Vuorinen and Herman Sjogrell had the hosts 2-0 up inside 18 minutes, before Rudi Vikstrom put the icing on the cake in added time.

Ilves 2-0 Gnistan

There were two goals and two red cards in Tampere, but while Goudouss Bamba and Saku Ylatupa ensured there was a sending off apiece, the goals both went the way of Ilves, who earned just a second win of the campaign. Jardell Kanga scored from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, before Teemu Hytonen wrapped up the points in second-half added time.
