Rare penalty shoot-outs and unlikely foes: Nedbank Cup final stats and facts

It will be the culmination of an intriguing campaign that has thrown up plenty of surprises and new records. Here is a look at the key stats and facts around the final of the competition since 2008.

1 – Only one Nedbank Cup final has gone to penalties, when Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town played to a 0-0 draw at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in 2015. Sundowns triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out.

1 – The goal that Galaxy conceded against Milford FC in their 1-1 semi-final draw was the first they had let in during the 2026 Nedbank Cup campaign.

1 – Galaxy will face Durban City in the 2026 Nedbank Cup final. Their only other meeting in the competition came in 2025, when City, as a second-tier side, defeated Galaxy 2-1 in Durban in the Last 16.

1 – One of Durban City coach Pitso Dladla or YS Galaxy counterpart Bernard Parker will lift their first major trophy as a coach. Parker has only been in the role a week and for him it would be instant success. Parker is also aiming to become the first person to lift the Nedbank Cup trophy as a player and a coach having scored the winner for Kaizer Chiefs in the 2013 final.

2 – Durban City and TS Galaxy are both appearing in a second Nedbank Cup final, though they had contrasting fortunes in their first. Galaxy were a second-tier side when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the 2019 decider, and remain the only club from outside the top flight to lift the trophy. Durban City were known as Maritzburg United when they faced Free State Stars in the 2018 decider and lost 1-0.

2 – Eight players are level at the top of the Nedbank Cup scorers’ charts this season with two goals: TJ Diedericks (CR Vasco da Gama), Pule Ekstein (AmaZulu), Victor Letsoalo (TS Galaxy), Lundi Mahala (Richards Bay), Moeti Mofokeng (Jacksa Spears), Thuso Mogale (Casric Stars), Bradley Mojela (Sekhukhune United) and Siphosethu Ndlabi (Milford).

3 – Former Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus heads the list of scorers in Nedbank Cup finals since 2008. He netted for SuperSport United as they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2012 final, and then bagged two for Pirates in their 3-1 victory over BidVest Wits in 2014. The only other players to have scored in multiple finals are Jeremy Brockie (SuperSport United), Bradley Grobler (SuperSport United), Thulasizwe Mbuyane (Orlando Pirates), Gaston Sirino (Mamelodi Sundowns/Kaizer Chiefs) and Sifiso Vilakazi (BidVest Wits).

3 – The biggest wins in a Nedbank Cup final were the 4-1 success for SuperSport United over Pirates in Durban in 2017, and the 3-0 victory for BidVest Wits over AmaZulu in Johannesburg in 2010. The last eight finals have all been decided by a single-goal margin.

3 – The biggest victories in this year’s Nedbank Cup have all been by three-goal margins: CR Vasco da Gama 4-1 Luthuli Brigades (Last 32); TTM 1-4 Orlando Pirates (Last 32); Army Rocket 0-3 Casric Stars (Last 32); Lamontville Golden Arrows 3-0 Orbit College (Last 32); and Milford FC 3-0 Mkhambathi 0 (Last 16).

4 – Remarkably, the last four Nedbank Cup finals have all ended with 2-1 scorelines. And the four before that all ended 1-0. Before this current run of 2-1 scores, there had never been a final that finished in that manner. The 1-0 scoreline is the most common in Nedbank Cup deciders, with seven finals ending with a single goal.

5 – This will be just the fifth Nedbank Cup final since 2008 that does not feature one of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns. The others were in 2009, as Moroka Swallows beat University of Pretoria; 2010, when BidVest Wits defeated AmaZulu; 2018, as Free State Stars edged Maritzburg United; and 2021, when Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, now Marumo Gallants, defeated Chippa United.

5 – The Moses Mabhida Stadium has hosted the most Nedbank Cup finals, with last year’s decider the fifth time. Chiefs beat Pirates 2-1 to claim the crown. This year’s final venue, the Peter Mokaba Stadium, will host the final for the second time. Other venues to have hosted more than once are Orlando Stadium and Mbombela Stadium, which have also staged two finals.

6 – The most goals scored in a single Nedbank Cup game this season is six: FC Cardinals 2-4 Jacksa Spears (Last 32) and Siwelele 3-3 Richards Bay (Last 32).

7 – Pirates last season appeared in a seventh Nedbank Cup final since 2008, a record for any team. They have four wins to their name. That took them one clear of Sundowns, who have been to six finals and have also won four. SuperSport United, with five finals, and Chiefs, with three, are next on the list.

9 – This year’s finalists, Durban City and Galaxy, have met nine times before in all competitions, and City have won six of those to go with two losses and a single draw. They have won the last three meetings, scoring six goals in the process.

10 – The penalty shoot-out between TS Galaxy and Milford in the semi-finals was the 10th time in this year’s Nedbank Cup that spot-kicks were needed to settle a tie. That is a record in the competition, beating the nine occasions in 2021. Fourteen ties this season have gone to extra time, which is also a record.

69 – The total number of goals scored in the Nedbank Cup this season from 30 games, an average of 2.30 per game.

450 – Durban City goalkeeper Darren Keet and defender Siphamandla Ncanana have both played in excess of 450 minutes in this year’s Nedbank Cup, the most of any players in the competition.
