Betway Premiership wrap: Kaizer Chiefs go back-to-back as AmaZulu, Stellenbosch also win

There were also wins for AmaZulu and Stellenbosch, with the latter moving into the top half of the table.

Here are some talking points from the day’s action.

Duba on target

Chiefs laboured before they broke the deadlock on 32 minutes with a first goal since April 2025 for Wandile Duba.

The 21-year-old picked up the ball on the right flank, showed great speed to beat his defender and lifted the ball over Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze. It was a lovely finish that makes you wonder why it has been almost a year since he last scored.

One weird fact about him: Chiefs have not conceded a goal in any of the seven league games he has started this season, with all but one of them at home.

As an attacker he does not play a huge role in that, but maybe it is more about how the team sets up when he starts.

Vilakazi breaks his duck

Chiefs got their second goal on 84 minutes to kill off the contest. It was scrappy, but they all count.

Mfundo Vilakazi couldn’t control a cross, then miskicked as he latched onto the loose ball, before finally drilling a shot into the back of the net at the third attempt.

It was his first goal since he netted against Orbit College in November, and only the third league goal of his career.

The win moves Chiefs into fourth place in the table, one point off the CAF Confederation Cup qualification places with two games in hand.

It was another clean sheet, their 13th of the season in the league.

Who knows the rules?

There was an incident in the first half that you do not see often, but it showed how few players know the more obscure rules of the game.

Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma made a save, collecting the ball in his hands. He then dropped it to the ground, kicked it about a bit and then picked the ball up again, which you are not allowed to do.

Referee Cedrick Muvhali immediately gave an indirect free-kick, which was the correct decision. None of the Magesi players had complained, though, while Bvuma and the Chiefs players seemed stunned.

Clearly no one except the referee was aware that you cannot do that. Magesi wasted the free-kick chance in the box.

AmaZulu go third

AmaZulu climbed into third place following a 1-0 win over hosts Polokwane City that made it back-to-back league wins and kept them in contention for the Confederation Cup qualification place.

The only goal of the game was scored on 87 minutes by Thapelo Matlhoko, who was making his first appearance since November.

He stole in ahead of Polokwane goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebulato to steer the ball in from close range after Riaan Hanamub’s cross. The 32-year-old keeper, who has started only 45 games in his entire career, probably should have been more alert to come for the ball.

It was a first goal in Usuthu colours for Matlhoko following his move from Kruger United at the start of the campaign.

Mabasa at the double

Stellenbosch FC climbed into the top half with a 2-1 home win over Chippa United that increased the visitors’ troubles at the bottom.

Both Stellenbosch goals were scored by Tshegofatso Mabasa with headers, taking his tally for the Winelands club to three in three league starts since he arrived on loan from Orlando Pirates in January.

He had been struggling for starts before this week, and a strong finish to the season from him and Stellies could certainly secure MTN8 qualification for next term.

Sinoxolo Kwayiba netted a late penalty for Chippa, his fourth goal in seven starts since he returned to the club from Pirates, where he was a teammate of Mabasa in the first half of the campaign.

Chippa are only two points above the drop zone but have played two games more.
