Preview

The Euro 2024 quarterfinals kick off this Friday, with hosts Germany taking on Spain in what promises to be one of the tournament's most exciting games. The MHPArena in Stuttgart will be the venue for this 12 p.m. ET (16:00 GMT) showdown as one title favorite will bow out of the competition.

Spain, who are tied with Germany as the most successful team in European Championship history with three titles each, are regarded as the favorites to win this competition. One look at their performance in this tournament explains why.

La Furia Roja are the only team with a perfect record, having won every single group-stage match. They kicked things off with a 3-0 win over Croatia before beating Italy and Albania both by a 1-0 scoreline to win the "Group of Death" with ease.

Athletic Club winger Nico Williams and Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal stole the show in the group stage before putting in another scintillating performance in the round of 16.

This time, Georgia were their victims, with Luis de la Fuente's side beating the Crusaders 4-1 thanks to another masterclass from their wingers. Williams came away with two goal contributions while Yamal delivered another beautiful assist to inspire this comeback victory.

However, there are concerns around Spain's backline. Additionally, while they made light work of Croatia and Italy, neither were at their best this tournament. Germany will be a whole different test.

Fortunately, the two-time FIFA World Cup winners have a fantastic record against the Germans, beating them in the Euro 2008 final 1-0 and thrashing their rivals 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League back in November 2020. Their most recent encounter was at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Alvaro Morata got on the scoresheet on that day before Niclas Fullkrug rescued a point for his nation. Morata will likely lead the line for Spain — Germany have preferred Kai Havertz up front so far — as La Furia Roja aim to eliminate the European Championship hosts, something they have never achieved before.

Germany are the hosts and will thus have the home crowd on their side. Fortunately, that is not the only trick up their sleeve as the four-time FIFA World Cup winners have finally regained form under the helm of Julian Nagelsmann.

While die Mannschaft nearly missed out on top spot in Group A, needing a stoppage-time Fullkrug equalizer against Switzerland to avoid finishing second, Musiala and Co. have been one of the most impressive sides in the tournament.

The Germans thrashed Scotland 5-1 in the opening game and overcame both Hungary and later Denmark in the round of 16 by a 2-0 score line. Musiala scored a fantastic goal in that last-16 showdown after Havertz gave them the lead through a penalty.

No side have scored more goals than Nagelsmann's crew, which means they should enter this clash with confidence. Additionally, Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and even Kai Havertz have all impressed so far.

However, die Mannschaft have struggled against Spain in major tournaments recently. While their Qatar 2022 encounter ended in a draw, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winners have not beat La Furia Roja in a major tournament since Euro 1988, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Rudi Völler.

Will Musiala and Co. put an end to this atrocious record? This will be the task for the host nation but beating the high-flying Spaniards, led by their two sensational young wingers, is easier said than done.

Team news

Spain: Nacho Fernandez has recovered from a foot injury and is available for selection. However, De la Fuente is expected to name an identical lineup to the one that thrashed Georgia, with Nico Williams and Yamine Lamal starting either side of captain Alvaro Morata while Pedri and Rodri lead the midfield. Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino will be pushing for minutes, however.

Germany: Jonathan Tah is back from suspension after missing the 2-0 win over Denmark. However, whether he will reclaim his starting XI spot from Nico Schlotterbeck remains unclear. Leroy Sane replaced Wirtz in the lineup for the round of 16 victory but the Leverkusen star will be hoping to return. Meanwhile, Niclas Fullkrug is unlikely to displace Kai Havertz up top.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 semifinals?

The winner of Spain vs. Germany will face Portugal or France in the last four.
