Arsenal return to action this weekend, with the Gunners preparing for a tricky penultimate game to their season. With only two matches left, the North London giants visit bitter rivals Manchester United as the title contenders aim to end their Old Trafford hoodoo.

The Gunners enter this match having watched rivals Manchester City thrash Fulham 4-0 on Saturday to go top of the league. As a result, Guardiola's men now sit two points ahead of Saka and Co. in the standings, and with only two games left, Arsenal cannot afford a slip-up.

The visitors face Manchester United this weekend before hosting Everton next week in their final game of the season. However, while Arteta's men are likely to win both fixtures, that alone would not be enough to end their 20-year wait for a Premier League title.

Arsenal will need Manchester City to slip up but the North London giants cannot focus on anything but winning at Old Trafford. Sadly, their record at the Theatre of Dreams is abysmal, having won only once away to Manchester United in the Premier League in their last 16 visits.

That sole victory was overseen by Arteta, with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang scoring the only goal. However, that was over three years ago and Arsenal desperately need to put this hoodoo to bed.

Fortunately, form favors the visitor. Unlike Manchester United, who have been in crisis this calendar year, the Gunners have lost only one league game in 2024, winning 14 out of 16. Additionally, Arteta's defense have kept a whopping 10 clean sheets during this run while scoring 51 goals.

While the North London giants suffered a gut-blowing 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa nearly a month ago, Saka and Co. have won their last four fixtures in a row, including a 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea, a 3-2 victory over bitter neighbors Tottenham, and a tricky 3-0 triumph over Bournemouth. Will Arsenal add the Red Devils to their list of victims?

While Arsenal are battling it out at the top of the table, Manchester United are in grave danger of missing out on European football altogether while going trophyless this season.

The 20-time English champions are eighth in the table and have been leapfrogged by Newcastle and Chelsea after their form nosedived in 2024. To put this into perspective, Erik ten Hag's men have won only twice in their last 10 league fixtures and those victories came against Everton and Sheffield United.

The Red Devils have suffered several embarrassing defeats during this run, losing to Fulham, rivals Man City, Chelsea, and – most recently – Crystal Palace. Monday's trip to Selhurst Park was their most recent match and the English giants were embarrassed by the Eagles, with Michael Olise guiding Palace to a memorable 4-0 victory.

As a result, Ten Hag's future at the club remains under doubt, with many calling for the Dutchman to be sacked. The FA Cup final against Manchester City later this month could salvage the season but even that might not prove enough.

The hosts are reeling from a dreadful injury crisis, with Jonny Evans being their only fit center-back, which has been a huge contributing factor. Could their showdown with Arsenal result in a bloodbath? Do not miss this clash!

Team news

Manchester United: Lisandro Martinez has returned to training but this tie comes too early for the Argentine. Mason Mount picked up a knock in the Palace defeat and will sit this one out too. While Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Scott McTominay are back and in contention, Ten Hag will be without Varane, Shaw, Lindelof, Maguire, and Malacia.

Arsenal: Unlike the hosts, the Gunners have no injury concerns. Jurrien Timber, who sadly suffered an ACL injury in the opening round, is back and could make the squad. Meanwhile, while doubts linger over Bukayo Saka and Takehiro Tomiyasu, both are expected to be fine. Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard should remain up front thanks to their lovely form while Raya, White, Saliba, and Gabriel will start at the back.

Key stats

  • Arsenal look to pull off the league double over Manchester United for the first time since 2006-07, having won 3-1 at home earlier in the season.

  • Additionally, the Gunners could win three straight matches against the Red Devils for the first time since 1997-1998.

  • However, Manchester United are unbeaten in all but one of their last 16 home clash with the North London giants in the Premier League, winning 10 and drawing five.

  • Ten Hag's men have lost 18 matches this season. The last time they suffered more defeats in a single campaign was way back in 1977-78, losing 19 fixtures.
