Liga MX standings before this weekend

[TABLE 40]

The Mexican league comes back to action with many fixtures that could shift the standings and deliver more excitement for weeks to come.

This week's focus will be on the league's most popular teams, who will have relevant matches throughout the weekend. The first to play will be Cruz Azul, followed by Guadalajara. Nonetheless, the biggest match of them all will come on Sunday, when América and Pumas lock horns in another edition of their bitter rivalry.

Elsewhere, the teams from the north side of the country will also be involved in big matches that could have a big effect in their hopes for success. Tigres will be part of the opening day with their game on Friday, while Monterrey will be involved in one of the clashes featuring the popular clubs.

Here are the most relevant games to follow over the weekend.

Top games to watch

Pachuca vs Cruz Azul - The league leaders enter this game following a narrow win against Guadalajara, and their match against Pachuca is expected to be quite similar. Pachuca have beaten La Máquina in their last two matches with the same score (1-0), but Cruz Azul's form has been impressive all season long, so we could see Martín Anselmi's team ending that streak. Cruz Azul's last away game ended in defeat, which will certainly serve as motivation to try and go back to winning ways when playing on the road against a team that has struggled to win matches all season.

Guadalajara vs Monterrey - El Rebaño has started to show how they could become an unexpected title contender under Fernando Gago, but their first two tests facing big candidates have ended in disappointment. First, they lost to América, and last week, they were on the losing side of their game against Cruz Azul. Now, they get to face the third-best team in the league, who will visit Akron Stadium with three straight games without a loss. Guadalajara have won three out of their last four against Monterrey, but Rayados have beaten their hosts two times in front of their own supporters in two of their last three trips to that venue. Which side will come out on top?

[MATCH 5041556]

América vs Pumas UNAM - There is no love whatsoever between these teams. Their heated rivalry has caused some dark episodes both on and off the pitch, and while this clash may not be as intense as others, América will want to prove they are still title contenders with a convincing win. Las Águilas will get to this clash following their Campeones Cup win against Columbus Crew, while Pumas will aim to at least repeat their one-nil win from last week. Back in April, Pumas claimed an unexpected win against América, which is precisely why all bets will be off for this classic rivalry featuring to Mexico City-based teams.
