Andre Onana unlikely to return as Manchester United stand firm on summer exit

Recent reports indicate that Onana is determined to report for pre-season and prove himself to the new manager, believing he still has a role to play at the club.

The Cameroon international has spent this season on loan at Trabzonspor, but it is understood he feels he has unfinished business and is not prepared to walk away without a proper opportunity to re-establish himself.

However, Flashscore insiders say United’s internal stance remains firm, with the club actively working to find a new destination for Onana during the summer window if required.

There is also expected to be movement in the goalkeeping department beyond Onana. Back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is likely to leave, with a return to Turkey viewed as a probable outcome.

As part of a wider squad reshaping, United will also be expected to recruit a new back-up goalkeeper.

Financial considerations will be a key factor in their decision-making, with 30-year-old Onana’s estimated £175,000-a-week salary seen as significantly out of step with what the club are willing to allocate to a squad player - particularly as a back-up keeper.

It is also worth noting that he pushed for an improved contract last year before leaving, perhaps making United even less inclined to bring him back into the fold.

Meanwhile, Senne Lammens has impressed since establishing himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. United are understood to be pleased with the planning and recruitment process that led to his arrival.

Barring a significant U-turn, it would come as a surprise if Onana were reintegrated into the squad ahead of next season.
