Sweden's Gyokeres: 'We have a good chance of reaching the World Cup'

Both sides have been hit by injuries ahead of the match in Valencia, Spain, with Alexander Isak's absence leaving Gyokeres as the man to lead the line for Sweden.

The striker failed to score in Blagult's dismal showing in Group B of World Cup qualifying, as Sweden failed to register a win in six matches, a run that saw Jon Dahl Tomasson sacked and replaced by Potter before the final two games.

However, Gyokeres did score nine times in six matches as Sweden won their UEFA Nations League group in 2024, performances which ultimately secured the Swedes this play-off tie with Ukraine.

The pressure will be on the 27-year-old to deliver, as Sweden look to return to the World Cup after missing out on Qatar four years ago, but pressure is not something that concerns him, as he told the media before the match.

"I don't think about it too much. When you play so many important games, you focus on just trying to do your best. As a striker, you always want to go out and score goals.

Scoring goals could be at a premium in a semi-final with so much riding on it against a side ranked 12 places above Potter's side, who will be bidding to return to the finals since their only appearance as an independent nation 20 years ago.

"The match is extremely important. It's a tough match. It could be a match where not many chances are created. That's what counts. We'll try to go in and get the momentum we want and create good chances," Gyokeres said.

The former Sporting CP man will be playing under Potter for the first time, after injury ruled him out of the two fixtures in November, and he has already felt a different atmosphere since his last appearances in October.

"It's more positive, but of course it's been a few months since then. We've tried to put it behind us and focus on this match we have here and hopefully another one in Stockholm in a few days," he said, referring to a potential play-off final with Poland or Albania on Tuesday 31st March.

"It's different with Graham and all the other new members of the coaching staff. It's easier to put the games from last autumn behind us. Plus, we have a good chance of reaching the World Cup," he added.

Positive bonds between teammates have become a discussion point in the build-up to the match, with Gustaf Lagerbielke sharing that he, Noel Tornqvist and Benjamin Nygren have been regularly going to the beach to "discuss life questions."

"It gets really deep," the Braga defender confessed: "Everything from conspiracy theories to the starting XI. We cover whether the moon landing was faked or not. The others had interesting thoughts - it was fun to hear!"

"We're not very good at zodiac signs, but we discuss how far away they are and whether there are aliens." As for how the 'stars' are doing ahead of Thursday's match: "We think they are in good shape," said Lagerbielke.
