Preview: Netherlands vs Türkiye

Although they did not have the strongest starts at this summer's Euro tournament, the Netherlands are still very much in this contest. The Oranje kicked things off with a win over Poland, but were held to a scoreless stalemate against France and then suffered a 3-2 loss to Austria on matchday three. However, as they had earned four points, Ronald Koeman's squad were able to qualify for the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed groups.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Netherlands had no issues easily dispatching Romania 3-0 and now will be hopeful of getting one step closer towards this summer's final by seeing off Türkiye. To date, the Oranje have progressed from five of their last seven quarter-finals appearances at major competitions but are in the quarter-finals of a EURO tournament for the first time since 2008.

Türkiye, meanwhile, have been steadily growing in confidence. The Crescent-Stars were stunned in their tournament opener against Georgia as they conceded first, but rallied back to score three goals sans reply. Despite losing 3-0 to Portugal on matchday two, they still managed to finish as runners-up in their quartet thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win against the Czech Republic on matchday three.

Pitted against Austria in the round of 16, Türkiye kept fans and neutrals alike very entertained as they and Austria played arguably one of the most exciting matches so far of this summer's European championship. Defender Merih Demiral scored a vital brace, while shot-stopper Mert Gunok pulled off one of the best saves of the tournament to deny Austria what surely would have been an equalizer and avoid having to play 30 minutes of extra time.

Saturday will be the fourth quarter-finals appearance at a major competition for Türkiye, who are hoping to make the Euro semi-finals for what would only be the second time in national history. To do so, however, the Crescent-Stars will have to do something they have never done before: to win three consecutive matches at a EURO competition.

Will Türkiye continue their impressive run and really make a case for being one of this competition's dark horses? Or will the Netherlands, who appear to be steadily growing in confidence, take one step closer towards featuring in the showpiece final next weekend?
