Since that fateful evening in Prague almost a month ago, when the World Cup ticket slipped out of Denmark's hands in a penalty shootout, national football coach Brian Riemer has been in a state of shock.
He has tried to analyze what on earth was to blame for the national team's decline in the World Cup qualification, where Denmark missed three opportunities to qualify for the World Cup.
And now he has come up with three main reasons in an interview with TV 2 Sport and Bold.dk
Firstly, the Danish national team players weren't sharp enough in the two areas where football matches are decided. This is related to the second reason, which is that Denmark has underperformed on set pieces.
"It was an area where we had hoped to gain an advantage, but we came up short, and that became decisive. That responsibility is mine", says Brian Riemer.
The third reason is a lack of continuity. Brian Riemer believes that he has been more or less forced into a "major generational change" due to injuries, illness, and suspensions, among other things.
He therefore hopes that in the upcoming period leading up to the Nations League in the autumn, he can avoid major changes in his national team.
"Right now, this team is crying out for continuity. There have been far too many changes. A national team needs players who can create relationships. And they do that when they play together often. And it has not been easy to create relationships in the qualification", Brian Riemer says.
After the defeat in the penalty shootout in the decisive playoff match against the Czech Republic in Prague a month ago, Brian Riemer stated that he had no plans to resign from his job.
"That has not changed", he insists. He has not even considered it.
Denmark's next tasks arrive in June, when Brian Riemer's team plays two test matches against unnamed opponents, which haven't been announced yet.
