Kenya end FIFA Series campaign with dominant Grenada win

First-half goals from Austin Odhiambo and Ryan Ogam, and a third from substitute Zech Obiero, enabled Kenya to return home with one win from the Series, which they used as part of their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After their opening fixture against Estonia which Harambee Stars lost 4-5 on penalties, coach Benni McCarthy made a number of changes to the starting XI with goalkeeper Ian Otieno paving the way for Farouk Shikhalo.

Rooney Onyango, Alphonse Omija, and Frank Odhiambo kept their roles at the back while Aboud Omar, who captained the team against Estonia, dropped to the bench, being replaced by Clarke Oduor, who turns out for EFL League Two club Grimsby Town, on loan from Bradford City.

Duke Abuya is another player who came in to replace Richard Odada, who missed the penalty against Estonia, and was handed the armband. Manzur Okwaro kept his midfield role while William Lenkupae started from the bench.

Austin Odhiambo kept his position alongside Ryan Ogam, who started alongside Job Ochieng and Ben Stanley Omondi. With only two minutes played, Kenya almost took the lead, but Clarke Oduor wasted an opportunity after being set up by Obuya.

Austin Odhiambo put Kenya ahead

Kenya continued to dominate in the opening exchanges, with an improved performance from their start against Estonia. The East African nation got another opportunity from outside the area after Trevon Williams fouled the advancing Obuya.

Austin Odhiambo stepped up to take the free-kick, which Trishawn Thomas read well to punch it out for the first corner. The resultant corner was not good enough as Thomas cleared the danger.

However, Kenya’s pressure paid off in the 13th minute when they broke the deadlock. A thunderous left-footed effort from Ryan Ogam from outside areas was punched back into play and Austin Odhiambo reacted quickly to sneak it into the net.

Kenya doubled their lead five minutes later. A quickly taken corner fell to Ben Stanley Omondi, whose effort towards goal was cleared halfway, finding Ogam. The former Tusker FC striker smashed it into the bottom right corner for his second of the FIFA Series.

Austin Odhiambo rattled the woodwork in the 32nd minute as Kenya continued to dominate Grenada, who had lost their FIFA Series opener 4-0 against hosts Rwanda.

Harambee Stars went into the half-time break enjoying a 2-0 lead, but it could have been more had they turned their dominance into goals.

Shikhalo denied Grenada

At the start of the second half, McCarthy made three changes for Kenya – Stanley Omondi, Erambo, and Rooney Onyango, making way for Mohammed Bajaber, Alpha Onyango, and Daniel Sakari.

However, it was Grenada who produced the first chance of the half when Jabari De Coteau latched onto a through ball, but his decision to sneak it past Shikhalo was thwarted by the custodian, who spread his legs for their first corner.

McCarthy made more changes in the 61st minute, pulling out Shikhalo for Brian Bwire, Frank Odhiambo for Alphonse Omija, Lawrence Ouma for Ogam, Austin Odhiambo for Obiero, and Clarke Oduor for William Lenkupae.

Harambee Stars failed to make it 3-0 in the 74th minute when Lenkupae, who had done well to round off Grenada defenders, unleashed a feeble shot which could not trouble Thomas.

However, Obiero added Kenya’s third in the 81st minute after his effort from inside the box, which took a deflection before hitting the back of the net. Despite Grenada pushing for a comeback, Kenya held firm to claim a clean sheet and emphatic victory.

The 2026 edition of this initiative featured 48 national teams – representing almost a quarter of FIFA’s 211 Member Associations – competing in 12 groups of four teams each.

The Series was approved by the FIFA Council in December 2022 and is fully aligned with FIFA’s Strategic Objectives for the Global Game: 2023-27.
