Liga MX - Preview for the 2nd legs of the Semi-finals: May 18-19, 2024

The Mexican top-flight will identify the clubs that will fight for the Clausura 2024 title this weekend, with four top contenders ready to leave it all out there to book their spots in the title clash.

The first games in each tie did not have a clear favorite, although Cruz Azul seem to be in the best shape to reach the title match. The other match ended with both sides being unable to score a goal, although that outcome seems to work in América's favor.

Without further ado, let us give you a heads up on how things will unfold this weekend. Remember that the first tiebreaker is the aggregate score, but in the event of a draw after both games, the regular season standings will be used to determine which team makes it through.

Liga MX - Semi-final matches (2nd leg) on May 18-19, 2024

Saturday, May 18

América vs Guadalajara: The biggest rivalry in Mexican football will play its fifth and final game of the semester at the legendary Estadio Azteca, with América trying to defend their status as league leaders and defending champions.

The first game ended in a goalless draw, which in normal circumstances would benefit América. Nonetheless, the team in yellow and blue has struggled recently with its form, leaving fans and experts with doubts about their chances to win back-to-back titles. On the other hand, Guadalajara make it to this clash on a ten-game run without a loss, where their defense has been impressive with six consecutive clean sheets. Last year, América and Guadalajara faced each other in the same stage, and while América had the lead after the first leg, Chivas was able to rise from the ashes and claim a 3-1 win. Will Saturday's game have a similar outcome?

Sunday, May 19

Cruz Azul vs Monterrey: La Máquina put up quite a performance on Thursday, claiming a one-nil lead in the series at Rayados' stadium. Now, things seem to be on a roll for Martín Anselmi's men, who could even lose by one goal and still make it to the title clash.

On the other hand, Monterrey are trying to overcome a mental hurdle speaking of semi-final ties, as they lost in this same stage during this semester's Concacaf Champions Cup, and they seem destined to repeat that exit in the domestic competition. If they are to play the title clash next week, then coach Fernando Ortíz will also have some demons to escape from, as the former América boss has never been able to come back in a tie where he lost or drew the first match.
