Top Ligue 1 games to watch on matchday six

PSG vs Rennes: Still unbeaten so far in Ligue 1 action this season, reigning champions PSG will aim to pick up all three points when they host Rennes on Friday. Les Parisiens ended up dropping two points during a frustrating 1-1 away draw against Reims, but are still sitting on top of the table. However, with Marseille breathing down their necks and joint-tied on 13 points, PSG naturally will be really keen on ensuring they at least can put a bit of distance between themselves and the chasing pack with a crucial victory.

Upcoming visitors Rennes, meanwhile, have really struggled to get going this season. They come into this match having won just two of their past five Ligue 1 games and presently find themselves in eighth spot ahead of Friday's trip to the Parc des Princes.

Toulouse vs Lyon: Given their status as one of the giants of French football, Lyon's start to the current campaign has been nothing short of disappointing. Les Gones have won just one of their first five Ligue 1 matches, and at this early stage, are closer to the drop zone than anywhere near competing for a European football berth. Still, it's very early on, and there are plenty of matches to be played. As such, Lyon will hope for another chance to restart when they travel to face Toulouse on Sunday.

But will they be able to get the job done? Toulouse have also had a poor start to the current term and also have won just one of their first five Ligue 1 games. In addition, they will be playing on home turf and thus will have that added incentive to try to put in a good shift - especially in front of thousands of fans who are certainly getting frustrated with their team's performances so far this season.

[MATCH 4968071]

Strasbourg vs Marseille: Marseille have made a fine start to the nascent Ligue 1 campaign as they aim to fully challenge for the league title this season. Ahead of their Sunday trip to face Strasbourg, they've won four of their last five games and have pulled level on points with PSG at the top of the table. However, they could find themselves potentially in third spot even before their Sunday kick off if both PSG and Monaco, who also have earned 13 points, win their respective matches on Friday and Saturday against Rennes and Montpellier respectively.

As for Strasbourg, the minnows are no strangers to pulling off upsets as fans of Ligue 1 have seen over the years. However, they are winless in their last three matches and have won just once so far this term - so on paper at least, it looks like Marseille should be able to get the job done and keep up the pressure on reigning Ligue 1 champions PSG at the top of the table.
