Just two days after their grueling Premier League showdown with Arsenal, English champions Manchester City return to action, hosting Watford in the third round. The Cityzens will want to return to winning ways, having dropped points against 10-man Arsenal, and have a Carabao Cup fourth-round ticket at stake.
Last season, Pep Guardiola's men were eliminated from the League Cup at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 away to Newcastle in the third round. However, the Premier League giants are facing a League One side with only two wins from their last 11 matches and are thus the overwhelming favorites to progress regardless of who starts on Tuesday.
North London giants Arsenal will also be involved in the Carabao Cup third round, with the Gunners hosting Bolton on Wednesday. This grants Arteta's men a bit more time to prepare for this fixture following their difficult 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium in which they played with 10 men for the entire second half.
The London outfit came within minutes of winning but were heavily criticized for their approach to the game despite picking up a point under difficult circumstances. However, they face a Bolton side languishing in 18th in League One with only two wins from their first six matches.
And finally, we have Liverpool's highly-anticipated clash with West Ham, the standout game of the midweek Carabao Cup third-round ties. The Reds host the Hammers on the back of their recent 3-0 win over Bournemouth, with Luis Diaz stealing the show. Arne Slot will likely rotate for this fixture but Klopp's successor will feel the pressure to win as he chases silverware in his debut season at Anfield.
West Ham, on the flip side, need a positive result to salvage their season. The Hammers boast only one win from their first five games of the season and thus sit merely a point above 17th-placed Ipswich Town. This disastrous start culminated with the 3-0 loss at home to Chelsea on Saturday, a result which piled on more pressure on newly-appointed head coach Julen Lopetegui. A win at Anfield would garner optimism, however.
