Spain's Euro 2024 champions Alvaro Morata and Rodri charged by UEFA over Gibraltar chant

Spanish stars Alvaro Morata and Rodri have landed themselves in hot water, with the Roja duo officially being charged by UEFA over a controversial chant during their team's Euro 2024 celebrations.

An investigation was opened into the pair after they chanted "Gibraltar is Spanish" during the title parade in Madrid. Rodri, who was named Player of the Tournament, was seen chanting that phrase before Morata, the national team captain, urged the crowd to join in.

Gibraltar, which is located on the Southernmost tip of Spain, has been under British rule since the 18th century. However, Spain have long called for its return, hence why Gibraltar issued a complaint to European football's governing body.

The duo have been hit with four charges in relation to violations of the general principles of conduct, the basic rules of decent conduct, using sporting events of manifestations of a non-sporting nature, and bringing the sport of football, and Uefa in particular, into disrepute.

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is expected to announce a punishment soon. According to Marca, Morata and Rodri could be slapped with a two-game ban.

This is not the only controversy following this summer's major international tournaments. Argentina, who won the recent Copa America tournament, were caught singing a racist chant aimed at the French national team, and Les Bleus' black players in particular, during their title celebrations.

If slapped with sanctions, Morata and Rodri would be absent when the Euro 2024 champions return to action in September in the UEFA Nations League. However, both men should be free to play for their clubs once done with their holidays.

Rodri is one of the favorites for this year's Ballon d'Or following another spectacular season, guiding his nation to a historic European Championship while winning a record fourth consecutive Premier League title at Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Morata has officially left Atletico Madrid for AC Milan and will head to the Italian capital in what promises to be an exciting Serie A season.
