They lead 1-0 from the first leg in Pretoria and will hope the plethora of missed chances from that game do not come back to bite them.
Having lost to Pyramids FC of Egypt in the final last year, they will be desperate to make up for that and avoid back-to-back defeats.
Here are some numbers ahead of the second leg in Rabat.
History makers?
Sundowns could become the first club in Champions League history to win five knockout games in a single season if they beat AS FAR in the second leg of the final. They have already won four times after the group stages, only losing at Stade Malien in the quarter-finals, as many wins as they recorded across their previous seven play-off campaigns in the competition (four wins in 24 knockout games).
Poor record in Morocco
Sundowns are unbeaten against AS FAR in three previous meetings (W1 D2) but will have to make history of sorts if they are to win the second leg. They have failed to claim victory in any of their eight away games against Moroccan sides in the Champions League (D3 L5), scoring just two goals in those eight matches.
Struggles on the road
Sundowns have won just two of their last 13 away games in the Champions League (D6 L5), though they did win their most recent game on the road, beating Esperance 1-0 in the semi-finals. It is a new trend for them to struggle away from home, as over the years they have generally been quite competent on the road.
Good at holding on
Sundowns last failed to progress from a Champions League knockout tie after winning the first leg in the 2017 quarter-finals against Wydad Casablanca. They won the first leg 1-0 before losing by the same scoreline in the second and were eliminated after a penalty shoot-out.
Big game from Aubrey
Aubrey Modiba scored the winning goal with a direct free-kick in the first leg of the final, the first set-piece goal in a CAF Champions League decider since Yahya Attiat Allah for Wydad Casablanca against Al Ahly in 2022/23. The Bafana Bafana left-back also created the most chances (3) and won the joint-most fouls (2) in the game. Sundowns have scored more goals from set pieces (5) than any other team this season.
Golden Boot?
Only Al Ahly’s Trézéguet (6) has scored more goals in the Champions League this season than Sundowns’ Colombian forward Brayan León (5). The only Sundowns player to score more goals in a single campaign in the competition was Peter Shalulile in 2022/23 (6). León had chances to add to his tally in the first leg and will hope to take them in the second.
Unwanted record
AS FAR have lost each of their last two games in the Champions League this season, both by 1-0 scorelines. That is as many defeats as they suffered across their previous 19 matches in the competition before that. AS FAR will be looking to avoid losing three games in a row for the first time in the Champions League.
