Randers rescued in Danish Superliga with draw against OB while Fredericia are relegated

OB on Monday night secured the eighth spot in the Danish Superliga and is in the running for a playoff match for a place in the Conference League.

At the same time, Randers FC are definitely assured of a new season in the top tier, while FC Fredericia were relegated along with Vejle.

These are the facts after Monday's entertaining 2-2 draw between Randers FC and OB in the penultimate round final showdown.

If FC Copenhagen beat FC Midtjylland in the Danish cup final on Thursday, OB will face the third-placed team from the championship playoffs for a place in the Conference League.

FC Nordsjaelland, Viborg, and Sonderjyske all have the chance to finish in third spot. On Monday, OB had the best start, and after eight minutes, Jan Fiete Arp demonstrated why he has matches for Bayern Munich and German youth international teams on his CV.

The attacking ace superbly curled a direct free kick beyond the reach of Paul Izzo to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. But after 29 minutes, the visitors were reduced to ten men when Viljar Myhra clumsily brought down Norwegian compatriot Martin Sjolstad.

The home side, who celebrated the 20th anniversary of their first cup triumph with special shirts and tributes from the players from the 1-0 victory over Esbjerg in 2006, at first did not use the advantage particularly well, but from the start of the second half, they still managed to restore parity through a header from Nikolas Dyhr.

Randers' Thibault Klidje turned the game on its head a few moments later when he converted a deep ball from Elies Mahmoud, but the joy was short-lived. Seven minutes later, Leeroy Osuwu was the first to get on the ball after Arp's elegant cross and brought OB's ten men back on level terms, which was also the final result.
