Who are the four clubs still in the running for promotion to the Betway Premiership?

The teams that finish second and third in the Motsepe Foundation Championship will feature in the play-offs along with the 15th-placed side in the top flight.

They will fight it out in home-and-away matches in a mini-league, with the top team earning the right to play in the Betway Premiership next season.

Two of the four second-tier sides still in the running play each other in Sunday’s final round, though both could book their places if other results go their way.

Here is a look at the quartet of hopefuls.

Milford FC

Points/goal difference: 53 / +16

Final fixture: Away vs Hungry Lions

Milford were at one stage the leaders of the league, but their form fell away until the last few weeks and they are now on a three-game winning run.

They go to fourth-placed Hungry Lions in what will be a tough trip to the Northern Cape, but know that a draw will be enough to book a play-off spot.

They have not been all that great on the road this season, with five wins from 14 games (D3 L6), but their current form suggests they can get the desired result.

Their two previous visits to Lions have resulted in a draw and a loss, while they won the reverse fixture 1-0 this season.

Cape Town City

Points/goal difference: 51 / +20

Final fixture: Away vs Leicesterford City

Some late-season poor form ended Cape Town City’s automatic promotion hopes, but they are back on track with two wins in a row.

They go to Leicesterford City, who have little to play for as they are safely in 11th, clear of relegation and with perhaps just a few league placings to gain should they win.

Cape Town City struggled for goals early in the campaign but appear to have rectified that, and only Casric Stars (43) and Kruger United (48) have scored more than their 41.

They have the best defence in the league and that could well come in handy, though a draw will not be enough if Hungry Lions beat Milford. In that scenario, City would drop to fourth or possibly even fifth.

Only Kruger (27) have managed more points on the road than them (22), so they will be hopeful of pulling off the win to make sure.

That said, Leicesterford are unbeaten at Dobsonville Stadium this season (W7 D7), so they are no pushovers.

Hungry Lions

Points/goal difference: 51 / +16

Final fixture: Home vs Milford FC

A draw could be enough for Hungry Lions if Cape Town City lose their fixture, but that would also depend on what Casric Stars do.

The safest bet is just to win, which could take Lions into second place as they bid for a place in the top flight for the first time and a rare berth for a team from the Northern Cape.

They have lost just once at home all campaign (W8 D5) and will be confident of upsetting Milford.

Their form has been patchy, though, with their 4-0 win at Highbury their first victory in three, while they were held 0-0 by local rivals Upington City in their last home game.

Casric Stars

Points/goal difference: 49 / +17

Final fixture: Home vs Gomora

Casric Stars are at home to lowly Gomora and know that nothing short of a win will be good enough.

They will expect to get it against a team that have nothing left to play for, though no side has drawn more times than Gomora this season (15), with 10 of those coming on the road.

The latter have yet to pick up an away win and it seems highly unlikely they will do so in this fixture.

Stars need to get the three points and then hope Cape Town City either lose, or, if they draw, Stars need to make up the goal difference that currently separates them by winning by three or more against Gomora.

Stars also need to hope Hungry Lions don’t beat Milford, or any other result is moot.
