Makgopa, Maswanganyi shine as Orlando Pirates get vital win at Stellenbosch

It is perhaps the most difficult of their remaining games in the league, where they need to keep winning to try and catch Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the table.

Here are the talking points from the game.

Evidence for the attack

Pirates toiled initially, but took the lead on 42 minutes, and the man brought back into the side got the goal.

There has been some debate over who should start up front for Pirates, with Yanela Muthumba having been given the nod in recent times.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos stated he was surprised Evidence Makgopa had been left on the sidelines, and perhaps the beanpole forward proved that point when he scored Pirates’ first goal.

Patrick Maswanganyi floated in a free-kick and Makgopa rose above the Stellenbosch defenders to head the ball into the back of the net.

In his first start for two months, Makgopa got his seventh goal of the campaign in all competitions.

Same again

It was 2-0 five minutes later and, once again, both players were involved in the goal.

This time Maswanganyi delivered a cross and Makgopa rose to challenge with Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

That appeared to put the gloveman off and the ball floated into the net, seemingly untouched by either.

It will go down as Maswanganyi’s goal, a good moment for a player who has also been in and out of the starting XI in recent times.

It was also a first start in two months for Maswanganyi, who now has nine goals and four assists in all competitions this campaign.

Unlucky Stellies

Stellenbosch almost pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining, which would have thrown the cat among the pigeons.

Devin Titus delivered an excellent low cross from the right and Genino Palace’s touch looked as though it would end up in the back of the net. Instead, it struck the far upright and bounced out to safety.

Palace has been among the goals of late. He has only six goals in 140 senior career appearances, but three of those came in the five games before this one.

Where does this leave us?

Pirates have moved to within two points of Sundowns, with both teams having three games left.

Sundowns are in action on Wednesday when they host Kaizer Chiefs, and Pirates will be praying their bitter rivals can do them a big favour.

Sundowns play again on Saturday at home to in-form Siwelele, and then finish their league campaign at TS Galaxy next Tuesday, a week from now. If they win all three games, we will be crowning them league champions.

Pirates travel to Magesi on Saturday, host Durban City on May 16 and then are at relegation-threatened Orbit College on the final day of the season on May 23.

Pirates’ superior goal difference is as good as another point, so they will hope someone can at least hold Sundowns to a draw. Then, if they win their three remaining matches, they will be champions.
