Hutchinson says a Europa League final would be 'amazing' for Nottingham Forest

The Reds secured a 1-0 first-leg victory over Aston Villa at the City Ground on Thursday, with Chris Wood converting a late penalty to seal the win.

Hutchinson delivered a standout performance, completing 10 dribbles, creating four chances, and registering the joint-second-most shots in the match.

In doing so, he became the first player to hit those numbers in the competition since Nico Williams for Athletic Club against AS Roma last season.

Reflecting on the achievement, the 22-year-old said that reaching the final would mean everything, but stressed that the job is far from finished.

"I think for us getting to the semi-final has been a massive boost to the club, to us players because it's very hard to get into the semi-finals," the England youth international answered Flashscore.com's question in the mixed zone.

"Obviously, we've just won (against Aston Villa), so we've got to focus on next week.

"If we get to the final, it's going to be amazing for the club and for everyone, really."

At least a draw in the return leg would be enough for Vítor Pereira’s side to progress, as Forest chase a place in what would be their third major European final, following their triumphs in the European Cup 1978–79 and 1979–80 campaigns.

In fact, they have history on their side, having been eliminated just once in their last 13 knockout ties after winning the first leg, with the lone exception coming in the 1983–84 UEFA Cup semi-final against R.S.C. Anderlecht.

Hutchinson was the creative force behind Nottingham Forest’s decisive goal, as his cross struck the arm of Lucas Digne, prompting a VAR review before Wood converted the resulting penalty.

Speaking to the media, he admitted he did not realise his control from Morgan Gibbs-White’s delivery had remained inside the Aston Villa penalty area.

"I thought I got there just in time. I didn't see it back, but everyone says get at the back post, so I just tried for that one. I could have left it, but got lucky with it."

He also spoke about balancing domestic and European commitments, expressing confidence in the squad’s momentum after staying unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions.

"It's about recovery. I think we've got to recover fast and just treat our body right," the former Ipswich Town man continued.

"We've just got to dig through it, it's the last four games now, so we've just got to dig deep and keep going.

"We want to win all our games. I think we've got a massive confidence now, we've been winning a lot. I think next week we can get at them again."

The former Chelsea youngster joined the City Ground giants for a club-record fee of £37.5 million but initially struggled to make an impact. However, he has since become a key figure in the team’s attack.

He explained what has helped him settle into the squad and the intensity of regular Premier League and European football.

"I've just kept going, I haven't felt sorry for myself," Hutchinson added.

"In football, a lot can change in a short amount of time. I'm just grateful to have that mentality and to have God with me as I keep progressing in my career."

Before heading to Aston Villa for their Europa League semi-final second leg clash, Nottingham Forest travel to Stamford Bridge for Monday’s Premier League fixture.

They have lost just two of their eight league away games against the Blues, and are unbeaten in all three visits since their return to the competition in 2022.
