Matildas book two home friendlies with Mexico in June

The Matildas are still licking their wounds from March's Women's Asian Cup 1-0 defeat to Japan in the tournament final, but secured qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup to be held in Brazil.

Their preparation for that tournament will take another step forward this winter when they host rank no. 27 Mexico at Newcastle's McDonald Jones Stadium and Sydney's Commbank Stadium during the June international window.

Mexico missed out on the 2023 and 2019 World Cups and will look to qualify for 2027 via the CONCACAF W Championship in November-December, when they will play off against rank no. 49 Haiti in Texas for a position.

The Matildas will be warm favourites for both fixtures not just because of their home advantage and superior ranking, but also a dominant head-to-head record of nine wins from the ten meetings between the two nations.

The most recent one was a 2-0 friendly win to Australia in San Antonio during April 2024.

The two matches will take place on Saturday June 6 (Newcastle) and Tuesday June 9 (western Sydney), with tickets to go on sale next week and Paramount+ to broadcast both fixtures.
