One stat for each team after the UCL quarter-final first legs as Bayern claim huge win

11 - Sporting CP nearly claimed a valuable draw at home to Arsenal, which would have certainly given them a chance in the return leg next week in North London. Instead, Kai Havertz had other ideas, scoring a stoppage-time winner to give the guests a 1-0 success. It leaves Sporting in a situation where they have to do something they have not done since 2010 - win in England. They outshot Arsenal, mustering 11 attempts in total, but could not find the back of the net.

8 - Arsenal will be relieved to leave Lisbon with the victory. That result also secured their place in the Champions League next season, as England secured a fifth Champions League spot via the European Performance Spot ranking. However, the Gunners want more, and as one of three sides left to have never won the UCL, anything less than collecting the trophy at the end of May will be a major disappointment. They grabbed an eighth clean sheet of the UCL this term, their most in a European season since 2018/19, when they reached the Europa League final.

10 - Real Madrid have work to do in their tie, as goals just before and after the half helped Bayern Munich to a 2-1 success at the Santiago Bernabeu. Both teams had 20 shots in a thrilling encounter in the Spanish capital, but it is Real who are in danger of a second straight quarter-final exit. They are now winless in their last five matches at this stage of the UCL. Moreover, Los Galacticos have suffered a defeat against a Bundesliga club in the knockout rounds of the competition for the first time in 10 years. They did progress from that tie though.

18 - Bayern have scored for fun this term, but it was not just about their attacking prowess on Tuesday. Manuel Neuer's nine saves played a key role in getting them over the line. Now they have to avoid defeat at home, and they will be in the semis for the second time in three years. They will have to keep in mind that they have not won the home leg of a UCL quarter-final in any of their last seven attempts. With that said, Bayern have found the back of the net 18 times in their five away matches this term. That is the most for them since 2019/20, when they scored 19 times en route to their latest title.

17 - Playing down a man for the whole second half, Barcelona were made to pay in the space of mere minutes. The Catalans conceded once in each half to fall 2-0 against Atletico Madrid. It leaves Blaugrana in serious danger of a third UCL quarter-final elimination against their LaLiga foes. Although they had a man disadvantage, Barca still created chances in the second half, but just could not get on the board. It ended a streak of 17 UCL home matches in which Hansi Flick's side had scored.

13 - It has been nearly a decade since Atleti have gone beyond the last eight of the Champions League, and now they are 90 minutes away from achieving that feat. Ironically for Los Colchoneros, they had not kept a clean sheet in 17 matches in the competition before holding Barca off. That was the 13th time Atleti had won the away leg of a two-legged tie in the European Cup/Champions League. The worrying thing for Barcelona? In all 12 previous occasions where this happened, Atletico prevailed in their tie.

4 - Goals from Desire Doue and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia have Paris Saint-Germain with one foot in a third successive semi-final. They topped Liverpool 2-0 at the Parc des Princes, something they were unable to do when the teams met last campaign. Just as they did in the first three league phase matches, Les Parisiens have picked up three wins in a row after beating Chelsea home and away last round. PSG now have the head-to-head with Liverpool in their favour with their fourth victory.

7 - Liverpool find themselves in quite the pickle now. Just as they did in the round of 16, the Reds have lost the first leg on the road. Now, with the quality of opposition being even higher, the challenge of overturning the deficit is looking a bit more arduous. The Merseysiders have won their last two home games in the UCL by multiple goals, which could give them hope here. Worryingly for them, Liverpool have failed to score in consecutive away games in the competition for the first time in seven seasons.
