Preview

Group C is one of two Euro 2024 groups that will wrap up on Tuesday. None of the four teams have been eliminated and all four can still mathematically qualify. However, England are all but through to the next round as their four points should be enough.

The Three Lions kicked things off with a 1-0 win over Serbia, with Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka combining for this goal. Southgate's men then faced Denmark and delivered a frustrating performance. Fortunately, they managed a 1-1 draw and thus remain unbeaten and top of the table.

Denmark and Slovenia, meanwhile, are tied on two points each. These two nations locked horns in their opening, playing out a 1-1 draw. Eriksen and Co. repeated this on Matchday 2 against the English while the Slovenians did the same against Serbia.

Speaking of the Eagles, Mitrovic and Co. sit bottom of the table with a single point. After losing to the Three Lions on Matchday 1, they rescued a point against Slovenia in Matchday 2 after scoring the latest equalizer in European Championship history thanks to Luka Jovic's 95th-minute header.

With one more round to go, which team will likely qualify and who needs what in order to progress to the last 16? Here is everything you need to know.

[TABLE 70 "Group C"]

Permutations

England

  • England currently have four points and will likely progress to the knockout stage regardless of Tuesday's result.

  • Victory over Slovenia guarantees the Three Lions to win Group C.

  • Southgate's men could still finish top even if they draw so long as Denmark fail to beat Serbia. If the Danish win, both sides would be equal on five points, meaning first and second place will be decided by overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings.

  • If England lose, they will finish in either second or third — second if Denmark don't beat Serbia and third if the Danish win on the final day.

Slovenia

  • Only a win over England secures Slovenia a spot in the round of 16. They will finish first with a victory so long as Serbia win or draw in the other match.

  • If Denmark and Slovenia win, the latter will finish either first or second depending on the tiebreakers as mentioned earlier.

  • If Slovenia draw, they will finish third as long as the other game does not end in a draw. If that match ends in a stalemate too, then they will be tied on three points with Denmark — whether they finish second or third will depend on the above criteria.

  • Slovenia will finish third on two points — and likely get eliminated — if they lose and Denmark beat Serbia. Sesko and Co. will finish either third or fourth if both they and the Danish lose or Slovenia lose and Serbia draw.

Denmark

  • Denmark are through to the round of 16 with a win.

  • Denmark will be split for first and second with England if they beat Serbia and the Three Lions draw with Slovenia. Denmark will be split for first and second with Slovenia if they beat Serbia and Sesko and Co. overcome Southgate's side.

  • Denmark will be split for second and third if they draw with Serbia and the other game ends in a stalemate as well. They will finish outright third if they draw and Slovenia beat England.

  • De Rød-Hvide will be split for third and fourth if both they and Slovenia lose.

  • Eriksen and Co. are out if they lose and Slovenia avoid defeat.

Serbia

  • Serbia are guaranteed a spot in the last 16 if they beat Denmark and Slovenia fail to beat England.

  • If both Serbia and Slovenia win, Mitrovic and Co. will finish third due to their inferior head-to-head record against the English — the Three Lions will finish second.

  • The Eagles will finish third if they draw and Slovenia lose by a two-goal margin or more. Otherwise, the two teams will be split for third and fourth by the tiebreakers.

  • Serbia will be eliminated if they lose.

Round of 16 bracket: Who will face who in the knockout stage?

The winner of this group — England, Slovenia, and Denmark can all mathematically finish first — will face the third-placed team from Group D/E/F.

The runners-up in this group — all four teams can finish second — will face Group A winners Germany.

If the third-placed team qualify for the round of 16, they will face Portugal or the winner of Group E (Belgium, Romania, Ukraine, and Slovakia all head into the final Matchday with three points each).

Team news

England: Luke Shaw returned to training but will not be fit in time for this tie. Elsewhere, Southgate has no concerns but could switch things up to improve their performance, with Conor Gallagher expected to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in the lineup.

Slovenia: There were some doubts surrounding Benjamin Sesko but the RB Leipzig starlet should be fine for this tie. Timi Max Elsnik and Adam Gnezda Cerin are also facing some concerns.

Denmark: Thomas Delaney missed the 1-1 draw with England due to illness but should be back for this tie. There are no other concerns.

Serbia: Filip Kostic will miss this game and the rest of the tournament should the Eagles progress following his knee injury in the 1-0 loss to England. Otherwise, Serbia have a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Key stats

  • Denmark have never made it to back-to-back European Championship knockout stages.

  • Serbia have crossed paths with the Danish three times since regaining its independence, losing all three encounters.

  • The last time these two nations crossed paths was in March 2022, with Eriksen and Co. winning 3-0.

  • England are unbeaten against Slovenia in six previous encounters, winning five and drawing once.

  • This will be the first encounter between the Three Lions and Reprezentanca at a major tournament since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with the English winning 1-0 in that group-stage encounter.
