Denmark weather siege to claim first win in Sweden in 11 years with last-gasp winning goal

The Danish women were on their heels for most of the match, to put it mildly, but thanks to Swedish inefficiency and a bit of luck, the visitors ran away with all the points against Sweden on Tuesday night in the World Cup qualifier.

The Swedes created plenty of chances but generally lacked the final touch to make the most of their dominance. And it was to cost them dearly as Denmark scored on their only chance in the second half.

After Monica Jusu Bah had given the home side an early lead, Pernille Harder equalized after half an hour, and in injury time, Janni Thomsen secured a very surprising away-win on a counter-attack.

It is the first time in almost ten years that Denmark beat Sweden in a qualifying match for a final tournament.

In 2025, the Swedes won three times against Denmark. The last time the Danes beat Sweden was in the qualification for the European Championships in September 2016, when Denmark beat a Swedish team that had already won the qualifying group at that time.

Thanks to the win, the Danes are now in first place in the World Cup qualification group with seven points. Sweden has four points, as does Italy, who beat Serbia 6-0 on Tuesday.

In Gothenburg on Tuesday, Denmark were on their heels from the first whistle, and even before the first minute had passed, the hosts hit the post. It was a Swedish storm against the Danish goal, and it seemed only a matter of time before the Swedes would score.

After eight minutes Swedes, without problems, bustled their way into the Danish box, and when the ball was squared across goal, Jusu Bah was on target to slot the ball into the net from close range.

The Swedes subsequently took their foot off the pedal, allowing the Danes to catch their breath. However, that did not change the fact that the Swedes found it extremely easy to create chances. But the big opportunities were not converted, and that was to prove costly after half an hour at the other end.

Napoli's Cecilie Floe broke into the box on the right and served the ball to Pernille Harder, who, with an inside kick, restored parity before half-time.

During the second half, the Danes really struggled to get out of their own half under the intense Swedish pressure, and it didn't make things any easier for the Danes when captain Pernille Harder was forced to leave the pitch after an hour following a head collision.

However, totally against the run of play, the Danish visitors stole the win in injury time when Janni Thomsen slotted the ball under the advancing Swedish keeper Jennifer Falk to give Denmark a very unlikely 2-1 win.
