EXCLUSIVE: Yohan Cabaye on raising the next crop of stars as PSG's youth academy director

In what follows, former French international Yohan Cabaye sheds light on how PSG's academy maintains their standards and their internal goal of developing even more players for the capital club's first team.

First of all, thank you for opening the doors of the media centre ahead of this Youth League semi-final against Real Madrid. Yohan, what are your thoughts on the overall progress and visibility given to these youngsters?

"It's important for us to highlight the work that's been done. We talk a lot about the players, and that's normal, but there's also a whole staff behind them: technical, medical, academic, and educational.

"All these people need to be recognised. My role is to ensure that everyone is fulfilled, connected and coordinated so that the spotlight shines on the players."

This Youth League semi-final is an important event. How are you approaching it?

"Yes, it's an event, but it shouldn't be stressful or an end in itself. Above all, it's an opportunity to test ourselves against other top academies, to see where we stand and to assess whether this generation can reach the very highest level."

Are you more satisfied with the process than the result?

"Exactly. It's the road we've travelled and the months of work we've put in. We're in the semi-finals of the Youth League, but also in the semi-finals of the Coupe Gambardella, and well placed in the U19 and U17 championships.

"It's a body of work built up over several seasons, with a determination to progress each year. Today, I'm really proud of that."

You seem very positive as the end of the season approaches...

"Yes, I have confidence in the players and the staff. My role is to make sure that everyone feels good, involved and full of energy so that we can go and achieve something really great."

It's been 10 years since the last final. Is there any particular symbolism in that?

"You can always find symbols. There's a dynamic and a high standard here. Young people shouldn't set themselves any limits.

"With hard work and determination, they can aim for the very highest level and make history for their generation."

You see them every day, can you see many of this group making it into the first team?

"I hope so, but we have to be honest: not everyone will make it. This season, several young players have had their chance, which shows that there is a real gateway. But nothing is given.

"They have to perform, work hard and earn every opportunity."

How do you maintain the same high standards with these young players?

"It's our role to keep them under pressure, demanding and determined. To get a reward, you have to work. There's no secret to it."

Is it possible to imagine a PSG team in the future with even more players who have been developed within the club?

"Nothing is impossible. It has to remain an incentive. Our objective is to train players for the first team. After that, it's up to the decision-makers.

"But today, there's a real focus on young people, and that opens up possibilities. It's up to us to remain humble and keep working."
