Which Bafana Bafana players need a strong showing against Panama to earn World Cup ticket?

That leaves question marks over quite a few others, which makes these two games vital for them as Bafana host their Central American opponents in Durban on Friday and Cape Town on Tuesday.

He might be looking at his depth in case of injury ahead of the World Cup, as there are quite a few names who have been brought back into the fold from the wilderness.

Broos has suggested that every player will get a run, to varying degrees, at some point, so who are the players needing a good showing?

Renaldo Leaner (Sekhukhune United)

Position: Goalkeeper

Sipho Chaine has been discarded despite good form at Orlando Pirates this season, handing Leaner a chance to audition. It might be that Broos knows what Chaine can bring, so he is just assessing other options, but clearly he is not sold on his three keeper options. Ronwen Williams is a certainty and Ricardo Goss will most likely travel as well.

Ime Okon (Hannover 96, Germany)

Position: Centre-back

The young centre-back was used in the COSAFA Cup last year and impressed, but has not been part of regular squads, so his late inclusion is interesting. He has, by all accounts, been doing well in Germany, but has limited international experience. Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Khulumani Ndamane are all likely shoe-ins at centre-back, and Siyabonga Ngezana looks as though he may miss the finals with a knee injury. That has opened the door for Okon.

Samukelo Kabini (Molde FK, Norway)

Position: Left-back

Kabini will likely go to the World Cup purely on the basis that Bafana do not have depth in this position, with Aubrey Modiba certain to be on the plane to Mexico. Fawaaz Basadien has not been playing enough at Mamelodi Sundowns to get the call and, after that, you look at who else might come in … it is limited. So Kabini has probably done enough already, but has he really convinced in the chances he has been given?

Thabang Matuludi (Polokwane City)

Position: Right-back

Another case where there are limited options for Broos after his undisputed number one in the position, Khuliso Mudau. Matuludi has been the back-up for some time now after Nyiko Mobbie was discarded, but the latter does bring the flexibility of being able to play on the right and left. Kamogelo Sebelebele has been used at the COSAFA Cup, as was Puso Dithejane, but both are more wingers and could be exposed at World Cup level. Still, a bad performance from Matuludi and he will be under pressure.

Jayden Adams (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Position: Central midfielder

You get the sense that Broos was desperate to get Adams back in the mix and, after some resurgent form for Sundowns, he is back. It will not take much to persuade Broos to take him; he clearly likes the player and Adams has performed well for Bafana in the past. This camp may, for Adams, be more about how he shows himself off the pitch and in training than what happens in matches. It seems likely that Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole and Thalente Mbatha have all sealed their places already, which likely leaves Adams vying with clubmate Bathusi Aubaas and Portsmouth’s Luke le Roux for the final spot.

Tshepang Moremi (Orlando Pirates)

Position: Right/left winger

You would think Moremi has just about sealed his place after some good performances at the Africa Cup of Nations and continued fine form for Orlando Pirates. But the wide areas are competitive, where Broos does have options, though Moremi can play left and right, which is in his favour. Mohau Nkota is not in this squad and will surely be in the thinking. Elias Mokwana too, having gone to the Cup of Nations.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United, USA)

Position: Left winger

Broos is taking another look at Hlongwane more than two years after he last played for Bafana because he is clearly looking for more from the wide areas. The USA-based winger deserves another go, having performed well for some time for Minnesota United, and was probably a bit unlucky to be dropped in the first place. He can be a bit hit-and-miss in front of goal but is an intelligent player and has improved during his time in MLS.

Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Position: Attacking midfielder

No one is disputing the quality and value that Zwane brings to Bafana and Broos will be itching to put him on his World Cup list. Maybe even a bit desperate to do so. That is because the number ‘10’ role is vital to how they play and he has a dearth of options. Relebohile Mofokeng will almost certainly go and Broos will be hoping Zwane does too. But, having barely played for Sundowns for the best part of two years, there are question marks over his form and fitness. Still, it might be worth having him along just for the off-pitch calm and experience he brings. He is a great character to have in the dressing room.

Thapelo Maseko (AEL Limassol, Cyprus)

Position: Left winger

Yet another winger being assessed again, Maseko predominantly plays on the left but can operate anywhere across the front three. Broos liked him enough to take him to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but after Maseko fell out of favour at Sundowns following injury, he was not selected. Now on loan in Cyprus, he has shown good form after playing regularly and deserves another look-in. He could well be fighting with Moremi and Hlongwane for a single spot.
