Liga MX standings before this weekend

[TABLE 40]

Two more games have been played in Mexico's top-tier, and as things begin to shift in the competition, we will have reached the halfway point of the regular season by the time we finish this weekend's matches.

As things stand, two teams are level at the top of the tournament, but things could change overnight with the kind of teams battling behind the two leaders for a spot among Liga MX's elite.

Contrary to what happened last week, Liga MX will return to its usual programming with a couple of games on Friday, leaving the bulk of the games to be played over the weekend. There will be some interesting fixtures on Saturday, including América's trip to Aguascalientes where they will look for a third win in a row against Necaxa, but the top clash to keep an eye on will feature the league leaders and the most popular club in the Mexican league.

Here are the most relevant games to follow over the weekend.

Top games to watch

Monterrey vs Mazatlán - This game could be key for Martín Demichelis and his men, as they could finish the weekend at the top of the competition. Visiting the team in blue and white will be Mazatlán, who have failed to replicate their fine form in this year's Leagues Cup, and have struggled to win matches all season long. Anything else than a win for Monterrey would be a surprise, and Mazatlán will certainly be looking for that to increase their hopes of a top-ten finish.

[MATCH 4955440]

Cruz Azul vs Guadalajara - This could easily become one of the best games of the season...and it will give Chivas a shot at redemption. Cruz Azul had been unbeaten until this midweek's games, which will make Martín Anselmi's crew even thirstier for revenge. Nonetheless, Guadalajara will also be ready for some payback after their failed trip to Mexico City last week, where they lost the Clásico against América and raised major doubts about their real chances in the competition. Cruz Azul defeated Chivas three-nil in their most recent game, and the team from Jalisco will do everything in their power not to repeat that disappointing performance.

[MATCH 4955441]

Santos vs Toluca - Los Diablos make the trip to Torreón as the only unbeaten team in the league, and even if they dropped points during their last match, there is nothing to indicate they could not take all the points back home. Santos have struggled all season under former Toluca coach Ignacio Ambriz, but nothing would feel better for the Mexican tactician to claim three points against a team where he experienced some disappointing issues before his departure. Toluca have won six out of their last seven games against Santos, and with our current info, it would not be strange to see them doing the same on Sunday.
