England kick off their UEFA Euro 2024 knockout stage campaign this weekend, with the continental powerhouses playing their round of 16 fixture on Sunday. Expectations are through the roof for the Three Lions, especially given their potential path to the final, but standing in their way is Slovakia who look to take down FIFA's fifth-ranked nation in the world.

While Gareth Southgate's side are the favorites to go through and are one of the contenders for the title, England enter this fixture on the back of tremendous negativity following their frustrating group-stage campaign.

Despite facing Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia in their first three matches, the Three Lions managed only one win all tournament and that was the cagey 1-0 victory in their opening game. Additionally, Kane and Co. found the back of the net only twice.

Both goals were somewhat fortunate, with Bukayo Saka's deflected cross finding Jude Bellingham for the winner against Serbia while Harry Kane scored the other goal against Denmark also courtesy of a deflection.

Furthermore, the Euro 2020 runners-up ended Group C with back-to-back stalemates, playing out a 1-1 draw with the Danish on Matchday 2 before drawing 0-0 against Slovenia in their most recent outing.

The frustration boiled over in the draw with Slovenia, with sections of the traveling fans booing Gareth Southgate while some threw empty cups at the manager.

And with the Three Lions winning only once in their last eight matches, it comes as little surprise to see fans demanding a shake-up to the attack in particular. All eyes will be on Southgate's team and his lineup too.

Slovakia, meanwhile, were one of three teams to emerge out of the nail-biting Group E. All four participants ended with four points each, with the Falcons edging out Ukraine to finish as one of the competition's best third-placed teams.

Every team won once, lost once, and drew once. As a result, first and second were separated by goals scored, with Romania narrowly edging out Belgium to the top spot, while third and fourth were separated by goal difference.

The Slovakians, who opened their campaign with an impressive 1-0 win over Belgium, finished with a goal difference of zero. This was good enough to see them trump Ukraine, whose goal difference stood at -2.

However, Francesco Calzona's men are in unfamiliar territory. Since regaining independence in 1993, the national team have made the European Championship knockout stage only once in Euro 2016. They also crashed out at the first hurdle, losing 3-0 to Germany in the round of 16.

Can Lobotka and Co. make history on Sunday? This will be a tough ask but after overcoming Belgium on Matchday 1, Calzona's men should enter this game with the hope of setting a new record.

Team news

England: Luke Shaw has returned to training but the Manchester United defender is unlikely to start and might only come off the bench in the second half. Meanwhile, questions about Southgate's attack have been asked, with fans calling for Bukayo Saka to make way for Cole Palmer. Anthony Gordon enjoys some support but is unlikely to displace Phil Foden in the lineup. Kobbie Mainoo, however, appears destined to replace Conor Gallagher in midfield.

Slovakia: Martin Dubravka, Milan Skriniar, and Stanislav Lobotka are all destined to start. The experienced trio played a crucial part in the Falcons' progression to the round of 16. Lukáš Haraslín is yet to score in this tournament but is expected to lead the line.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals?

The winner of England vs. Slovakia will face Switzerland in the last eight.

Key stats

  • This will be the seventh encounter between these two nations.

  • Unsurprisingly, England dominate the head-to-head record, winning five out of their six run-ins.

  • However, England and Slovakia have met only once at a major tournament and that was Euro 2016, with that clash ending in a goalless draw.

  • While the Three Lions have been poor in attack, Southgate's men boast the joint-second best defense, conceding only one goal.

  • Furthermore, England have conceded the fewest expected goals (xG) all tournament.
