The Englishman played a part in three second-half goals, scoring two himself before setting up teammate John McGinn in the dying stages of the match.
Watkins was Villa's key attacking outlet throughout the evening and registered a match-high six shots and 10 touches in the opposition box - while also taking his tally to 19 goals for the season in all competitions.
